Wheel alignment

Quick query - tyre pressures spot on, running same tyres all round, steering wheel is properly centred when driving straight (so not obvious off in the tracking). At high speeds (which obviously are only ever attempted abroad on unrestricted roads or track days officer) of say 100 - 110 mph I get a small but nevertheless perceptible rumbling feeling in the steering wheel accompanied by a similar feeling under right heel. Was wondering whether indicated mis-alignment or whether is entirely normal at that speed (in a cabriolet) and a function of less body rigidity etc).

Any Suggestions gratefully received.

Should add that it does not seem to get any worse up to an indicated 125. Just the same slight tremor in the wheel. Have not attempted the exercise more than once. Thought it wise to check feedback in case wheel about to drop off (joking aside all nuts tightened up properly etc) or other drama imminent.

Most probably you have thrown a wheel weight or your wheel balance is slightly out.

Hi Michael,

You haven't said whether the car has had a full 4 wheel alignment check. If the rear wheels are out of alignment it can be a cause of a mis-shapen wheel which would cause a rumble noise very similar to a bad wheel bearing (as Maurice suggested). It has happened on my other car (not a Porsche) but it did mean replacing the tyre to get rid of the noise and the vibration.

Cheers.

I had a similar thing with my car, although most noticeable at 55-65. I assumed the wheels were out of balance, so had them done by a local run-of-the-mill trye place. Watched them do it, and the readings looked spot on when they finished (as far as I could tell...)

It still felt wrong, so took it to OPC Solihull who did it again. The balancing was miles out on all four wheels, redone, and now feels fine.

First off; check the balancing and that the wheels/tryes are all true, and don't assume that because it has been done that it is correct!

I had much the same on my 964 and it was one of the discs - Porsche were having some quality control problems at the time - both fronts were replaced under waaranty and the rumble was gone.
