wheel bearing debacle

when i bought my 944 a couple of weeks back the seller mentioned a "slight" noise from the backend.. described as "a bit whirr whirr" lol ...

so i hop in, drive off and sure enough.. shot wheelbearings.. sounded like i was being chased by a steam train .. so, drive the 80 miles home at about 50 mph (better slow than in a ditch) park her up and get on with other things for a while ..

so my neighbours gone away for a few days and said i can use her drive, so order new discs/pads/bearings all round (brake pedal pulsing like mad .. so i'll just fit new ones on the assumption they're warped and have done with it) and get the car up on axle stands, remove wheels and run into town to get new tyres fitted (old ones had plenty of tread, but were old, perished and mismatched both in brand and size), and wait for bits to arrive ..

so, got the frontend stripped down yesterday, cleaned everything up, fitted the new bearings and discs to the hubs.. all good (except the front pads havent turned up)

go to start on the rears.. and i've lost my splined bits and 36mm socket... (havent needed them since doing the backend of my 924 .. 2 years and 2 house moves ago) which means a 20 mile round trip into town to get new ones .. and, as the mrs is away with the scooby the only transport ive got is my f400 racebike .. (daytime mot's are great) which is buried deep in the garage, on race tyres, and still setup for oulton park (read "twitchy as hell")

so find and attach the numberplate and head into town trying to avoid bumps/cats eyes/potholes/anything that might provoke a tankslapper.. then worry about leaving a bike with no ignition switch/lock unattended while i source some bits n pieces ..

job jobbed i head home and resolve to soften the geometry on the little zxr and do this more often as i remember why bikes are fun. (wheelies and being able to overtake just about anywhere)

so get back, crack off the castle nuts, remove the driveshafts completely (might as well check the CV's while im in there) off with the discs and hubs, drive out the stub axles, gasp in amusement at the completely disintegrated state of the OS outer bearing and go have some tea before setting to cleaning everything up for re-assembly tomorrow morning.

well, the NS will all be fine, the OS however is a different story.. everything is wrecked .. stub axle, castle nut, hub.. the lot.. the inner race of the outer bearing has split into many pieces, this has scored the hell out of the axle to the pint where the new bearing is actually a loose fit.. also the splines are worn, and must have been so for a while as the splines in the hub are also completely shot.. and the castle nut looks like someone put it in a vice and beat the sh** out of it for fun.

not the end of the world admittedly.. except for the timing.. its now thursday night/friday morning.. and I've got a meeting 100 miles away on saturday morning, no other (real) transport and no chance of getting replacements here in time.

anyone know of a used porsche spares place in south wales ? even Bristol would do cos i can hassle the mrs to pickup and run down the M4 with 'em.
