Can anyone please tell me have they had the above replaced and what symptons and noises leed up to problem please. Any Idea of cost for one?

I think Melv has had one fail if memory serves me ? bearings in general drone or whistle for want of a better description before failing. An experienced hand on a defective bearing can spin it and feel for graunchiness. Execessive play in the parts also being a reasonable sign. Some bearings just fail when subject to overload of some type not within the bearings spec. Problematic ones on Porsches are not allways easy to diagnose due to there size and placement. For instance a wheel bearing is quite a substancial item on a 911 and is unless shot to bits hard to feel any sort of play in until well worn. Especially as the time honoured test of grabing the wheel and feeling for lateral play is no easy task on a 17" wheel some conserable strength being required. When driving a number of noises can easily be mis interpreted as wheel bearing failure tyre noise being the most fundamental. Parts wise cost is not too bad though labour cost can mount up depending on what wheel bearing it is i.e. front or rear have a look at Porschashop or similar for prices.

just had a quick look on porscheshop site they list as about 30 quid for front and 50 quid rear each. Then add labour on top so not too bad really.

Des, when a front wheel bearing failed on my 964 RS, the oscillations from the wheel and brake disk pushed back the brake pads. So, you might feel that you need to pump the brakes to get efficient braking. The best test, though, is to test the play of the wheel itself.

Thanks Laurence, will hopefully have the car back tomorrow....[&:]

Des, I had my rear wheel bearings replaced. There is a drone that becomes progressively louder with miles (100s). If it is just one wheel bearing (often the NSR on tracked cars), the drone will sound louder when you swerve the car to one side than the other. ie, if it's the NSR, the drone is loud when swerving to the right. If it's the OSR, he drone is louder when swerving to the left.

Beware: the bearing is cheap, but the labour to replace is not. It's quite a labour intensive job. Even if only one bearing has failed, it's worth replacing them in L-R pairs at the same time.
