Wheel Bolt Question.

Why does the wheel valve on a Porsche 964 need to be by the coloured bolt and the lock nut must also be on it ?, maybe very simple but why.

I doubt if it's important to have the locking nut on the red thread unless you're entering concourse. I dispensed with locking nuts some time ago on the basis that a thief would take your wheels if it really wanted them, regardless of locking nuts being present. And it's less of a faff when changing wheels often. In fact, I know use open steel nuts all round so that I can visually check that a wheel is not coming loose.

Surely it's t do with the weight of the valve itself. Are the red dots opposing or matching from hub to hub? I've never looked.

The weight of the missing bit of metal for the hole offset by whatever the tire valve weighs is not significant once the tires are fitted and the wheel has been balanced.

So it can't be anything to do with uneven weight distribution caused by the valve.

By the locknut maybe? I would have thought the weight of a locknut and the weight of the other four nuts would be the same following good design practice.

It was my understanding that if you put the locking nut in the same position on every wheel when you come to remove them it is easier to find the locking ones. This may not be a problem in a well lit garage with a lead lamp, but stuck at the side of the road with a puncture is a different matter.
