Wheel Centre Badges Falling Off

Hi All

I bought a new set of wheel centre badges for the 550 (the dearest Porsche sell apparently) and within six months, one of the centre badges had fallen off :0(

This happened whilst cleaning the car, so it didn't do any damage, and I still have it.

Porsche gave me another new one, as I have a two guarantee apparently :0)

However I still have the old one, and badge and was wondering what would get the remaining glue off the cap so I could re-glue it?

The glue fails and the badge falls off, but you try getting the glue off yourself !

Anyone else know what will get this stuff off? (BTW white spirit doesn't)

Cheers

Tim

Try cellulose thinners (but watch it it removing paint). Or a dremel with a wire brush attachment, as the badge will cover any stratches you make and will give you a good key for the subsequent glue (try araldite epoxy resin).

Cheers

Will cellulose thinners be safe on the plastic?

You can expectt hese to keep falling off Tim. Seems to be "normal" [:'(]

Amazingly my OPC saleman warned me off of getting a set of coloured centres just for this reason. I didn't spec on the order and he mentioned that they fall off quite a bit if they are fitted after delivery. I thought that if he's telling me this then it's been a problem for them so didn't bother. I presumed it was because the glue they use wasn't up to the job.

Hi there,
Had exactly the same problem with my 550 spyder wheels.
I fixed the badges using a stronger compound super glue and it appears to have done the job well. I removed the over spill and the old remains using a standard tin of solvent remover I bought from B&Q (which I found kicking around my garage!).
Seems to have done the job quite well - but be careful becase this stuff can be pretty harsh!

The cap has been soaking in water for a week ..... still won't come off, so I guess its solvent time :0(

Its good to know that if you buy a new set then you are covered for replacements for two years, at £130 a set thats only £65 a year :0)

If you don't fancy thinners, try petrol, meths, isopronanol alcohol or engine degreaser. One of these may help loosen the adhesive. However, in all cases try a small area first.
Good luck.
Regards,
Clive

I had this happen on my S550 anniversary model after only 4,700 miles from new. 3 fell off within a week after taking the car for its first service. I complained to Porsche who replaced them all without any question. The centres are machined brass and I was concerned at the damage they could do to the windscreen of a following car if flying off at 70mph!

I thought the same, but I guess as the badge is in the centre of the wheel, there isn't actually a lot of centripedal(centrafugal) force to fling it outwards, so hopefully it would just fall off and hit the ground (albeit travelling at 70mph in a straight line)

Can't you tell I am an Engineer/Physicist .... I'll shut up now :0(

Still worying though :0(
