Wheel centres 1996

Hi,

Does anyone know what the Cup wheels really came with as wheel centers in 1996?

The car I'm likely to buy arrived at the dealer for prep with the coloured Porsche logo wheel centers (which I like) but it now has silver ones that say "PORSCHE" across them. (The dealer has had the wheels refurbished and changed the centers during the process to the ones he believes are correct for the 993/year). He says the ones on it were plastic boxster centres.

Any info welcome, Thanks

Mark

I might be wrong, but I think the ones the dealer's put on are too late for the 993. They sound like 996 plastic centres (not that nice). I reckon crested colour (or crested black outline) centres are the right ones, but there are also differences between original ones and "˜after-market' ones... as usual most detail things are more than they appear at first[&:]

I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong[;)]

I think the 'standard' centres were black Porsche crest on silver. Coloured crests extra. Anything else smacks of non-authentic after-market.

I can't comment on the 'Boxster plastic ones'...

I am not 100% certain, but I think it went something like this :

Carrera 2 (coupe, targa & cab) - black on silver porsche crests.
Carrera 4 (coupe and cab) - text saying 'Carrera 4'
Turbo - text saying 'Turbo'.

I am less sure about Targas and Cabriolets.
I think the 4S may have said 'Carrera 4S'.

The ones that you describe that have 'Porsche' across the face don't sound familiar to me.

There are two types of coloured crests, one is a slightly smaller crest and is inside a circle, and the other is a larger one that is almost the size of the wheel centre cap and has no circle around it. The smaller one with the circle around it is the one that was optional for the 993. (I think the larger one may have come later with the water cooled cars)

Given that the coloured wheel centre crests are a popular after market item (and cost about £90 - the smaller crests with circle are slightly dearer than the larger ones), I don't think your dealer was doing you any favours by swapping them out for the ones you described. More like he was hoping you wouldn't notice they were missing...

Hada look at the Porsche parts catalogue - there are lots of variants, and the listing is a bit confusing because the model designation isn't particularly clear, but heres the entire listing for wheel centres. Interestingly the picture on the parts exploded view shows a Porsche crested design, maybe this is just an example. I assume in the listings too that the 'grey' coloured ones are for use on the grey centred split rims ?

I'll leave you to decide which one is right [;)]

I know the Targa came with a large colour crest and it was metal. The small coloured crest within a circle in metal was (and still is I believe) the optional Porsche Tequipment one.
