Wheel corrosion problem

I have 18" Sports Classic Wheels (split rim) whith corrosion problems on all 4 wheels. AFN Guildford where I purchased the car are being unhelpful in the extream and Porsche Customer Assistance not much better. Has anyone had/have similar problem and what did you do about it?

Tahnk for reply. Your experience is extreamly similar to mine which is worrying. Guildford also took pictures of my wheels and suposedly sent them to Porsche. To cut a very long story short the pictures also dissapeared and car was then out of warrenty (convenient). Worse still I had ongoing dialogue with garage which when I escalated to Porsche Custome Assistance the garage apparently had no record of. I am still pursueing with both AFN Guildford and Porsche CA. If no satisfaction I will escalate to Germany and if necessary sue AFN. Treatment so far from both AFN and Porsche CA has been a disgrace as far as I am concerned.

This is an ongoing issue with the titanic GT3 boys. You ought to check their (lack of) progress

Car is 4 years old in July although just less than 2 years old when problem 1st advised to Porsche.

Re Tim's advice to look at the GT3 issue. I cant seem to find it. Can someone point me directly to it?

Looks like I'm going to have to take the "court" route. Both "Trading Standards" and "Consumer Direct" advise that I have a claim under the Sale of Goods Act (goods not fit for purpose) and that whether the goods are under warrenty or not is irrelevant. They suggest I write first asking for wheels to be repaired or replaced (which I will do but dont hold out much hope) and if no joy to take them to small claims court.

For those of you that have had similar problems has anyone had them with Guildford Porsche Centre and what is your story?

Cheers, Chris.

I have 18" sport design wheels on my Boxster, and they have started to corrode to, from reading other forums it seems to be a common problem. Even with a refurbish they only seem to last 9 months till the corrosion comes back again.

Three weeks ago I had no corrosion, now I have blob about the size of a fingernail so it seems to spread rapidly. It seems to be caused in my case by some dirt between the splits puncturing the laquer, then the road salt over winter has taken its toll.

Attached is a pic of mine just starting.

Have you tried getting you dealer to sort out the problem (if so which dealer was it and what was their response)? Also see my previous reply re "sale of goods act". If you havent damaged the wheels (ie by curbing them) then you have a case that they are "not fit for purpose" as per the act and you should write to the dealership asking for then to be repaired or replaced (Trading Standards will give further advice). Let us know how you get on if you take that route.

Still pursuing my claim. I need to find out what the average life expectancy of my alloy wheels should be before corosion might appear (assuming not damaged and ignoring the numerous problems many people have had with their wheels). Can anyone help? Just for interest I have another car with alloys (not Porsche you wont be surprised to hear) that I have had from new and didnt show any corrosion problem until more that 20 years old.

Also has anyone made any progress with their own corrosin problems or have any new ones arrisen?

We had all four wheels replaced on our SmartArse last week by Mercedes Benz. All had corrosion and the car is 16 months old. They replaced them without any hassle (apart from forgetting to order the new wheels) and so should yours be replaced by Porsche.

My Boxster 17" wheels are 6 years old with 89k miles on them, they have scratches and gouges but no corrosion at all.

JCB..

I took my 13 month old Boxster S 987 in to Cambs OPC last Friday for steering wheel vertical movement but checked all around the car to capture any other problems and noticed that I have spider corrosion under the paint and laquer around the bottom of the spokes on my standard 18" wheels (front only). I pointed them out to dealer and he has taken photos to get Porsche GB thoughts on the issue. Now armed with these posts I'll chase up.

Thanks

Paul

My 18" carrera wheels on my 03 Boxter S showed corrosion over the summer, 17,000 miles only. I took it into OPC Cambridge, nice about it and very sorry and all that but can't (won't)do anything about them - it happens they said !. Personally I think its very dissappointing that this is such a common problem, I have never experienced anything like it on my other cars -mainly mercs. I am going to leave them as they are and have already pointed the problems out to several dozen people when my car is at shows or at meetings. Almost everybody is suprised by the problem and aghast that Porsche will not put them right. I hope this hits Porsche were it hurts, putting people off buying their cars because of poor after sales care !

Hi All :)

I have the same 18 inch wheels on my 928...I needed the extra traction that 10 inches wide gives you....

I bought them cheaply from a 996 owner with EXACTLY the same corrosion problem that you all have...

Its a KNOWN problem on the 2 piece wheels and any OPC is lying if they say they do not know about it.....

I rang a few experts on wheel refurbs on this....the answer was....yes we can refurb them perfectly.......around £75 per wheel,,,,,and NO we will not guarantee them for over 6 months.....as IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN....... :(

Hope this helps :)

All the best Brett :)
