Wheel Insurance Question

Leading on from the thread below - can anyone advise?

On a separate note- BTW: Do Sport Design alloys need to be noted as a modification on the insurance considering my car is a c4 (1999) or could they have been standard fitment for the car.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi. My alloys didn't need to be noted on the insurance as they were an option when bought with the car (same split rim Sports alloys as you).

I too am facing a refurb - may I ask how much a good refurb is going to cost you, and how you're going to do it? By that, I mean - do you face the same problem as me in that I don't have a spare set of wheels to put on the my every day use car whilst the others are being refurbed!! A logistical problem!

Keep us posted!

Elephant.co.uk seems to consider a factory wheel upgrade option on the original car as a modification. Is this not correct? It is making a surprising difference to my insurance premiums and I believe they were also original fitment on my car.

Or is Elephant wrong? I don't want to risk being uninsured in the event of a claim...

Thanks,

Steve [FONT=verdana,geneva"]

I guess you've got to go with what they're telling you. I was with Elephant last year -don't think they charged me extra but could well be wrong.

I'm now with Groupama (through Performance Insurance Brokers), who definitely didn't have a problem with it - I have the full aerokit. I've also just changed address, roughly same postcode, and they didn't even charge for that either! Recommend them - though not claimed on it so...

Premium for 2000 3.4 was just under £500 (8000 miles pa) - £150 less than Elephant (I'm 36 with full no claims).

Cut & Paste doesn't always work too well, does it? [;)] [;)]

Sport Designs were an option on the 996, and I can't see why you would need to declare them on your insurance.

It depends on the insurance company you are with. Some say that any optional extras need to be disclosed, but others only want to know if the car has any changes from the original manufacturers specification.

I would always recommend that you disclose anything you know is an optional extra or a change to the original spec and see what your insurance company say. Any good performance car insurer or broker should understand what you are telling them and be able to arrange a suitable policy that covers the changes on a like for like basis.

Much better to do this now than having a row with them after a claim!

I understand what you are saying Ian, but the difference in an insurance payout for a car with Sport Designs opposed to one with Turbos, for example, would be minimal, if anything. I doubt the insurance company would take into account the car's options. As far as I can make out from Steve's previous posts, they may well have been factory fitted anyway.

I have never listed all the options on my car when I have taken out insurance, nor have I been asked. Apart from the "has the car had any modifications" questions. I can't imagine they would be interested in my aluminium handbrake lever, gear lever, cruise control, rear wiper, sunroof, etc., so I never bother mentioning them.

You may be surprised with what different insurance companies say and if they consider that you have none disclosed a modification, then they may void your insurance or refuse to pay your claim.

You forgot the metallic paint.[;)]
When I next renew insurance, I'll see what they make of all the Porsche option codes!!!
If this policy was adopted by all insurance companies, they would never have to pay a claim.

Modifications - yes I most certainly would declare them. Options - Never have done. Just my 2p's worth.
