Wheel Nut Failure

I've got 18" Sport Design wheels on my Turbo, with 7mm spacers (at the front to clear the calipers, at the rear just to get the wheels out as close to the arches as possible). Refitting a wheel the other day and and torquing up to the recommended figure, the thread on one nut stripped completely. I've fitted a new one which tightened up OK, but it occurred to me (a bit belatedly) that the spacers may have reduced the thread engagement to a dangerous degree. Anyone else had a similar experience?

I take it you are using shims that are simply a metal ring with holes for the wheel studs, and not spacers that have a seperate longer wheel stud attached?

If you do have shims then yes you have shortened the stud length by 7mm and may not have enough meat left on the original stud to get a good torque on 20 year old alloy wheelnuts. New wheel nuts are a good idea for any of us if you are still using originals or alternatively you can get open ended racing nuts from people like Bert at www.partsforporsche.com so you can at least see if you have enough stud to bolt on to.

I think you've answered your own question there really, I'm not sure how much engagement there is initially but 7mm is quite a lot to loose, especially with alloy nuts which are potentially 20+ years old.

If you're committed to keeping the spacers/wheels then you'll need to fit longer studs, usually not that hard to do if you can find them. I'm sure someone else can help.

Yes, they are just a circular alloy plate that fit over the existing studs. Think I'll replace all the existing (original) nuts for now.
