wheel nuts - what torque?

So, do you guys use a torque wrench?

I've always (on all my other cars) used "feel" and I've never had one come lose, nor have I stripped a thread. But with this car I wonder if I should be a little more scientific.

The ali wheel nuts are not the greatest, I always use a torque wrench to 130nm, that way you have the peace of mind it was done correctly and it is one thing less to worry about, especially if you track the car.

Of course if you were to only tighten the wheel nuts with your fingers, it would make the car potentially much more exciting everytime you took it out for a run []

Get a torque wrench.

If you ever fiddle with wheels, steering, tyres and brakes then make sure you do it properly.

It's reasonably easy to get a 1/2" square drive torque covering 40-200Nm which should deal with most M10 to M14 threads. The Halfords Professional is quite a nice one at £50. The difficulty is covering M6 and M8 thread torques (typically 5-10 for M6 and 20-35 for M8) with one other wrench. Probably best to get a 3/8" drive covering 8-60ish, and use your judgement on M6 screws with a normal spanner.

94 ft/lbs is putting a force of 94 lbs force,12ins from the centre of the wheelnut,so using a long enough socket wrench at that point,a typical man can exert around 100lbs f max.Torque wrenches need to be used very carefully, backed off from their settings and reset each time, plus there is very little feel unlike the old way.
