Wheel offset

Hi All
I could really use the accumulated knowledge of this forum to help me on this one!

I have acquired a set of 17" wheels to fit on to my C2 Targa (narrow body) which is currently running 16"s. The new wheels are 8Jx17 ET47 at the front and 9Jx17 ET47 at the rear. According to the tyre offset calculator at www.1010tires.com/wheeloffsetcalculator.asp the change from my existing wheels will be

Front inner clearance -20mm, outer position +30mm
Rear inner clearance -8mm, outer position +18mm

These wheels are currently shod with 205/50s on the front and 255/40s at the rear.

The rears seem fine when fitted and there is still plenty of clearance on the inside, especially around the oil pipe which is the later (flatter) type anyway. Where I am concerned is at the front. There appears to be just enough inner clearance on full lock (but I do mean just) but I am most concerned about the outer edge which is now close to the wheel arch. The car is not lowered yet, but I will be fitting a set of KW V3s quite shortly.
This combination of wheel and tyre size does not seem unusual so I am wondering about the offset. Spacers obviously won't work as they will reduce the offset and push the outer edge out further. Does anyone have any experience of this, or perhaps I am worrying about nothing!

Chris

Chris, Although an 8J ET47 wheel is a little unusual at the front, it's not so extreme as to cause a problem. On another thread there are some discussions about some wheels from AP Design which are ET42 and they seem to fit OK although I'm guessing they may roll the arches to cope. I'd expect a more "normal" front wheel to be something like an ET52, so you're only 5mm further out and I really wouldn't expect that to cause a problem. Regards Dave

I agree with Dave, I have some 8j with a ET42, but are a but pokey than normal, just fit, but with look and tires I would prefer a little bit more inboard with a bigger offset.

Thanks Guys I guess that you have confirmed what I thought. the front looks just a little strange but it will work, and the rear is more or less spot-on. Thanks again to you both. Chris

I hope that answers some of the queries Chris. Dave, I was offered a set of 18" Techart wheels, but had the offset of ET40 on a 8j and Et 60 I think on a 10J, this wont defo fit on a 964 will it?

Norm, I would guess that the fronts would be very marginal although you might just get away with it if your arches are rolled. The rears are close to the Turbo 3.6 fitment (ET61) but you could, of course, use spacers with those. Something like 13mm would put it right. Regards Dave
