I'm getting a bad feeling about this! On the subject of oil leaks I'd say that you will find 964s that don't drip a drop, you will find 964s whose owners SAY they don't drip a drop, you will find some which DO drip occasionally and you will find some which gush!! Having an engine which is largely oil cooled with the best part of two and half gallons of the stuff sloshing around it's not surprisng that a few little leaks develop over time. Generally the small leaks are more annoying than serious although some of the earlier cars (89-91) do suffer more than the later cars since some of the weak points were addressed in production.
Top end rebuilds will invariably become necessary, usually after 100K miles +, but some owners justify it earlier - and often for the wrong reasons. Some cars last much longer. Again, the early cars were designed with no head gaskets and this, together with valve guide wear, often led to a lack of compression. A decent leakdown test should determine the level of leakage and hence, the need for a rebuild. A decent PPI would include a leakdown test.
I would strongly advise you to get a PPI done on any car you are seriously considering. Particularly if you are not so familiar with the 964. Someone with experience of this specific model can save you from making a BIG mistake - or give you some confidence that you are making the right choice. Bear in mind that repairs - and parts in particular - can be VERY expensive. In retrospect a £150-£200 charge for a PPI can pale into insignificance.
Some well known problems can be identified easily by a specialist and you need to know the difference between, for example, a fan not running because a fuse is blown (20p cost) or the CCU has failed (£1200 cost).
Find the right car in the right condition and you will never regret it, but make the wrong choice and you will be kicking yourself for ever.
I hope that helps - and I wish you luck in your search.
Best regards
Dave
