Wheel question

I have read somewhere that 8x16 front and rear works very well, particularly on the track.

Is this correct and why would this work well when Porsche didnt offer this non staggered combination? my car gets mainly used for daily driving but also the odd track day. What would be the pro's and con's?

I want to remove my 17" Cup3's and go back to D90's. 7 & 8's are fairly common to get but 9's appear to be rare. I have been offered a set of 8's.

Thanks for the advise.

What's the car Graham? S2 or Turbo?

I find the balance of the car better on the track with equal widths F/R - the cars are a bit prone to understeer on corner entry, so this helps IMO. A bit of trail braking is also good.

On an S2 I'd definitely recommend 8's all round for the track, with 225 or 245 widths - should be good for the Turbo as well, although 9's might be better.

I run my turbo on 225/50 all round at the track (have some cheap P zero C's) on clubsport rims - 7.5J F 9JR

My car is an S2 (91) how would the car drive on the street? can i space the rears out for cosmetics?

I used to run my S2 on 8" all round with 245/45 tyres.

Pros- on track the understeer is reduced and in the dry the extra width adds a bit more bite.

Cons - on road at low speeds you will notice that the steerng is a bit heavier. You may also have to run with a bit more camber to ensure they dont foul the arches.

The narrower front is always the preferred setup from manufacturers partly because recovering from a bit of understeer is easy for the general public.

The thing to check is that your 8" are a set of 4 rears, and they dont have a little lug on the inside of the spoke, this will foul the caliper on a later car.

Lali, thanks for your input. Sorry, couple more questions...

Do you think the steering would be any heavier than my current 17" cup3's with 225/45 tyres? - also my car is lowered to 968 cs spec in relation to the fouling.

Would fitting spacers to the rear give the drive of 9's and the look?

and if i'm not going to be doing a lot of track driving would you recommend going with the original set up?

Thanks

My old S2 running 8's all round and sat on KW V3's NO spacers. Teledials not D90's in that pic... I thought I had a pic of it on its 8" D90'd too...

As I said the wheels were all rears so they had a funny offset 52.3 ?? ( I'm guessing at that number )

If you're currently running 17's then I think any 16" will feel heavier. certainly the newer wheels are lighter then the old ones.

I dont think you'll suffer with the set up on the road. it might be worth swapping the ARB's for the M030 ones and the 968 castor mounts but thats just worth doing anyway.

what it looked like when i bought it... also on 17" cup3's
