Wheel refurb and colour

My wheels are 20 years old now and are looking a bit sorry for themselves so I'm taking them to Lepsons for a refurb next week (not the cheapest but heard some good results from them).

They are the Design 90 wheels with coloured crest centre caps, apparently Lepsons mask the crest of the cap and can paint the caps the same colour as the wheels.

My question is should I just keep them the original standard silver or are there any other colours that suit this wheel/car well?Apparently there are 5 silvers at Lepsons to choose from, I know there is a brighter silver called Bright Silver (funnily enough) has anyone had theres painted in this colour or seen it on the D90?

I was always a silver (but never chrome) wheel man but now that coloured wheels are in-vogue they have grown on me and I have recently seen some colour combo's on cars that look great. Now the coloured wheel cat has been let out of the bag and the results look so good I don't think this will be a passing fad or fashion. Try to find the recent thread (maybe from two weeks ago) where Paul Hilux posted some pics of his son's D90's that were finished in high gloss black with a silver rim. They really did look stunning, so if black with a silver rim would suit your cars colour then I reckon it'd look great. However even though i've softened my stance on coloured wheels my opinion of chromed wheels is still the same.

I'm personally taken and tempted with laquered satin black with a red pinstripe on the rim for mine. I've seen that on a red Leon Cupra the other day and it looked great.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm a big fan of keeping the D90's on this car as they are just so 1980's and look good with the 944 shape.

I am a little worried about changing the colour from the original spec but at the same time the options available on paint colour are now so varied it seems to me a wise thing at least to consider something else.

I am still drawn to this Bright Silver which appears to be a much more glossy and silvery look than the original almost drab version.

Not sure if it will look a bit too bling on a Champagne Gold S2 though...

On a red car, that would look the poodle's plums. I could be tempted by something similar but with a dark blue pinstripe for mine ...

Bear in mind that darker wheels look smaller (not sure whether this is an issue for you.) While I like black wheels, it may not be your thing.

One thing you could consider, which I have never seen done with the D-90's, is to pick the holes out in a different colour to the rest of the wheel. The Mk1 Golf GTi Campaign models had P-slots done like this, and they worked very well.

Piccie here, P-slots on the LHS. (ATS cups on the right - a very pretty wheel on a Mk1 Golf.)

You could consider this in black, or a colour to complement your car (champagne silver, perhaps.)

Photos definitely needed!

I know what you mean about black wheels. The thing that changed my mind was a Guards Red 968 clubsport in the carpark at work that had gloss black cup 2's on it - it looked the danglies, but he did have his calipers painted red which sort of lifted the look a bit instead of having all black holes filling the arches. I think if I were to really pull the look off I would also want my calipers painted red, which would add signficantly to the cost if I get someone to do it for me, or the faff if I decide to do it mysef. I think the results would look spectacular though. Anyway, cosmetic mods are certainly on the back burners for me with timing belt change looming later this year.

A couple of guys at work with Porsches (a 996 turbo and a 993C2S) recently had thier wheels repainted. They are both concours tarts an wanted someting a bit shinier than plain silver. They ended up going for the VW metallic silver instead of original Porsche metallic silver as it is a bit brighter more metallic. That might be what your after against your Champaign Gold. Or what about something contrasting like a metallic gun-metal grey or something of that shade?

Some good ideas, thanks. I'm def thinking more shiny silver than darker wheels as I think that darker D90s could look a bit weird, although I may be wrong. I have seen them diamond cut which looked pretty good but I want something with a finish that lasts.

Here are my wheels as they are at present, on the faces there not that bad TBH but they have a few battle wounds and the rear sides are very corroded. I think I should just get away without repainting the crests, just as well cos they're not cheap either...

Here's a link to Steve944T's black chrome alloys which look great despite my comment RE chrome alloys:-

Here's Paul Hilux's thread with his son's black D90's with a polished rim, which look great in my view:-

You could get something like this but with a metallic gun-metal or graphite grey if you really wanted to go mad!

Those black D90's with the silver rim do look very good and set the Porsche crest off nicely.

Hope he wont mind pinching the pic.

What do you think they would look like on a gold car?

I think I'd go with a graphite myself, it would suit the car very well, but black would be on my list too. Silver would be right at the bottom of couse!

Thanks Scott [:D]. I love the look of mine, but think it would look a bit dull without the red calipers.
Having said that, I really like the black with silver rims too. That is what I originally had planned for mine, but the forged alloys don't have a defined rim so it probably wouldn't work. Definitely seems to suit the D90s though.

Those look nice (disregarding the euro look stretched tyre). When I was last dithering over which colour to do the ones on the 944S I realised just how man shades of Graphite there are. I think you could also get away with one with a hint more brown/bronze in it to really suit the cars colour.

Hi

I'd got as close to original as possible.

I think there are few alternative colours that would look right with your car.

We could see a resurgence in the previously out-of-favour D90 here - they both look great in those pics. Shame they don't do them in 17" to get over my Big Blacks.

Steve, I know what you mean, my wheels don't have a defined edge to the rim so I don't think you could get away with the polished treatment which is why I like the pin stripe.

Yes I am def liking this, black or graphite centres with polished rims, reminds me of those similarly finished fuchs and very porsche.

Perhaps something like this satin black for the centre, finish off with polished/cut rims and coloured centre caps?[:)]

My Alpina wheels were re furbed by the Blast Shop Carlisle(supberb job as ever) they were finished in the correct sparkle silver and look stunning when the sunlight hits them, check out sparkle silver looks supberb !
The coloured crests can be removed the centres painted to suit and then centres araldited back in situ.
