Wheel spacers, newby question so apologies!

Ok so the 30mm lowered springs & adjustable rear shocks are on order for my '83 944. I've now noticed the rear wheels look rather inboard compared with the fronts. As i remember when the car was new it was possible to option a wider rear track when ordering the car.

Is it possible to purchase these somewhere?

Would longer wheel studs be required?

I have 16" Fuchs with 205/55 tyres on mine & bearing in mind the suspension drop, if it is possible to widen the track, what width in mm without fouling the arches? Has anyone tried something similar?

With regard to the effect on handling i'm assuming without any other changes although the car will be more stable there will be a slight increase in understeer. I imagine that with the wider than standard tyres this won't even be noticeable other than possibly on a trackday. Of more concern is the added potential load on some suspension/drive components? (I have new wheel bearings going onto all 4 corners so that shouldn't be an issue).

Any advice much appreciated........

Cheers,
Simon

I know of a couple of early 944s with Fuchs and spacers. I think 10mm or 15mm is the norm. You will need longer studs I expect for either, certainly for 15mm spacers, but you shouldn't have arch fouling issues and I don't think the bearings get enough of a harder time to make much difference. I think they look the business with subtly spaced Fuchs wheels.

Thanks again Fen, top bloke. Had a little hunt round t'internet & come across these. Should do the job nicely http://www.jasmine-motorsport.co.uk/porschewheels/wheel%20spacers.htm

If you're ever in the Essex area, pop into Lakeside Karting for a burn (i happen to work there). Can't promise i'll let you win though but it will be my shout!

The Porker should look a treat once i've finished with it. God knows what the rides gonna be like, hopefully my spine will survive!

Cheers, Si

Received a reply to the same question from Jasmine & they're recommending 26mm spacers. They're also stated in the many years of supplying up to 75mm spacers they've never had a wheel bearing issue.

Is there 26mm clearance between the tyre and the arch throughout the full suspension travel? I'd doubt it and if there isn't it will foul.

If it is going to foul it will be on the passenger side (assuming RHD) at about the 10 o'clock position and it will happen at the point in suspension travel where the fattest part of the sidewall meets the arch at that point.

Even if it doesn't foul I'd expect that big a spacer to look spaced. Maybe you like that look, but personally I think they look best with a subtle spacer that just makes the car look more "right" as the arch is fractionally more filled. Mik has done that with the D90's on his S2 (he's too cheap to buy Cup 1's [:D]).

The R21 crowd are at Lakeside on Sunday. As your Reg Sec I woud assume I will be winning, then? [;)]

I've discovered the factory spacer was 21mm. I did think 26mm was a bit far & like yourself i prefer the subtle look. I'll get my ruler out & ponder some more. Slightly concerned that a 30mm drop might look a little 'Max Power' but we shall see. It just looks to be sitting too high alongside my E30 which is bog standard.

Well as Reg sec Paul should you not remain impartial & fair at all times. Oh forget that, i'll make sure the special experimental triple engined Prokart is wheeled out for the final for you :)

Have a great event, the format is a one off extended heats for you guys. Hope it stays dry (unless you consider yourself the rainmeister of course!)

Its even better in 100cc 2 stroke karts, and when it hails it just gets silly, 360's in the braking zone [:D][:D]:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Interested to read Fen's comment on what Mik did with his S2...
I have D90s and don't really wish to change to anything else, but would like the arches filled a little more.
Mik - what width spacers did you use; did you need longer studs, and if so was it a difficult job to change them?
Thanks
