Wheel spacers

I read in an old 911 monthly that someone had fitted wheel spacers to their 993 C2S and claimed that it improved the handling and ride, and also the look of the car, and how the wheel fitted the arch better.
Does anyone have any experiences or advise on spacers or shims?
