Wheel wobble

Any advice for Spencer (note 14'' Fuch)?

I'm looking for a bit of technical advice regarding steering wheel wobble on the 911T. I've replaced the discs/pads, had the tracking re-set and wheels balanced, the tyres are just 1500 miles old and are inflated to 20psi but I'm still suffering from wheel wobble at all speeds and especially during braking - have you experienced this before or is there a forum I can join to find out more?

If the car has been left standing for any length of time, particularly on low tyre pressures (20psi!), then the tyres may have flat spotted or even deformed the carcass. This would be transmitted through the steering.

Hi Spencer, Check for slack in the front wheel bearings. With the car jacked up holding the tyre top and bottom there should be only be barely perceptible play. Any more and you will get wheel wobble, vague steering and noise. Also if your dampers are worn the strut itself may have play. You'll find this by doing the same test as for the wheel bearing.

The wheel bearings are very simple to adjust as they have the Beetle style (Can't think why...![;)]) clamp. Take the cap off, slacken the allen bolt and then rotate the clamp to nip up the bearing to eliminate the play. As long as the bearings are not damaged, only slightly worn, this will recover the situation without buying new.

Whilst the wheels are off check the mounting faces of the wheels and discs to ensure there is no corrosion / dirt causing the wheel to run out of true. It may seem odd but check the back wheels as well, for brake disc run out, bearing wear, mounting face dirt and balance. If they are bad enough it will still set the steering off.

Other than that tyre pressures do certainly seem low, 26 would be a more reasonable number.

Good luck.
