Wheels and offsets again!

Hi

I was looking at a 1987 D plated 944 today with a view to getting some cookies for it.

It is currently on 15" x 7" teles so cookies should fit, but they don't!

On the FAQ thread, 1987 cars the teles can be either 15x7 23 offset (like the cookies) or 16x7 53 offset like the later cars.

The wheels on this one are Porsche Teles 15x 7 53 offset.

So the question is, where would they have come from?

Could they be 924S?

Mike

Teledials are available in early & late offsets, 15" & 16" for both. You can put late offset wheels on an early offset car with 30mm spacers, you can't (or shouldn't) put early offset wheels on a late offset car, they'll stick out too much.

My old '89 2.7 lux had 15x7" teledials, they are fairly common & cheap. The 924S had 15x6" teledials.

If thats what it says then its wrong. Series one 944s and 1986 model year series two 944s (made between September 1985 and August 1986) use a 23mm offset wheel. Series two 944s manufactured from September 1986, for the 1987 model year onwards, use a 52.3mm offset (on a nominal 7" wide rim). 1986 model year ATS telephone dial wheels will fit series one 944s and the ATS cookie cutters from series one 944s will fit 1986 model year series two cars. 1987-onwards model telephone dials wont fit earlier cars without the use og hubcentric spacrs and 23mm offset wheels wont suit series two cars, although some will fit.

924Ss use 6" x 15" ATS telephone dial wheels which have a 52.3mm offset. 'Le Mans' special edition miodels used an ET 52.3mm 7" rear from a 944.

Thanks for the replies.

On the FAQ thread there is no mention of 15x 7 teles with 53 offset (15x 7 - 23, 16x 7 - 53, 16x 7 - 23 and 16x 8 - 23 are mentioned)

Riverside says they were available, as I found today (unless they were 6inch off a 924S!), but I've checked a couple of books which only mention 16 inch teles replacing the 15 inch cookies as standard on the oval dash models ie with the later (53mm)offset.

Does the FAQ page need updating?

Does the FAQ page need updating?

Yes! [&o] That's Smithy's area of knowledge so I'll leave it to him...[;)]

Is the 1987 thing confusing because it's the 16" Teles, fitted to Turbos? 15" were the common option on all the oval-dash Luxes in both early and late offset. Obviously the early ones are very common, the late ones rare but no-one wants 15" wheels on a later car so very cheap.

I said it too! [:D]

Virtually all telephone dials intended for the 944 were of the 52.3mm offset variety.

We understood that but they are 16" usually not the 15" with the 53 offset, which is what was confusing us!
Mike

I've got 15 inch teledials with the 53 offset on my 88 lux. Confused me too after reading the wheel faqs page, but must just be an oversight.

Everything Ive said about ATS telephone dial wheels applies to both 15" and 16" types. 23mm offset 'dials were available in 7" x 15" for the 1986 944 and 7" x16" and 8" x16" for the 1986 944 Turbo. The same sizes were used for the 1987 model year, but the offset was altered to 52.3mm.

My car / teledials, (that Mike was looking at), must have just been on the cusp of the changeover, as the car's date of first registration is 30th October, 1986. Definitely a 52.3 offset. Perhaps the exact dates Simon mentions could be added to the faq post, as I was on the verge of buying some 23 offset ATS wheels. (thanks for lending yours Mike).

Because of the confusion that model year and year of registration cause, then Id suggest going by the age identifier in the VIN. WPOzzz94zFN4xxxxx and before will use ET 23mm wheels whereas WPOzzz94zGN4xxxxx and later wheels will suit ET 52.3mm wheels.

Simon

That sounds like the best way of doing it!
It certainly confused us, compounded by the fact that the Bible (FAQ section) makes no mention of what we had before us!
Who is going to tell Mr Smith!?
Thanks for all your help.

Sounds a good idea.
What exactly do the "F" and the "G" denominate? My vin number has an "H" !

VINs were introduced for the 1980 model year, which is A. F represents 1985: G 1986 and H 1987 (model years, not neccessarily the year in which it was built).

I've added this to the wheel faq, thanks Simon. I've printed it in a new colour for you! [:D][:D]

If someone wants to clearly write down what I need to add or delete then I'll cut and paste it in.

There are so many numbers in this post I simply cannot understand what bit is wrong [&:][&:][&:]
