Whats the largest wheel/tyre combo i can fit on my 89 944 turbo. Also, just fitted a boost enhancer, car now pulls like a train, but the overboost protection cuts in if i push it hard in 4th gear.I need to adjust the enhancer, but is the boost guage accurate,or do i need a seperate one?
Thanks for any help,
Andrew.

The car will protect itself to a point with the standard KLR settings. Personally (and I'm probably totally alone here) I don't really see the point of a boost gauge in the cabin nor even for setting up a boost enhacer. What would you set it to? At a guess as much as you can get away with without the knock sensor spoling your fun, which you can do without a gauge.

When I ran mine with a BE only I set it to the point where it would only trip the overboost protection after extended periods of wide open throttle that can only be achieved in 4th and 5th, provided I was using Optimax. Normal 95RON would trip it much more readily. If you're using ordinary unleaded just now then try running it on V-Power as it's now called and that will probably sort you out.

You will blow a head gasket soon if it's not been changed and you use the BE to get significantly better performance than the car has without the BE, but that's all the damage it will do and a new one will probably last fine at the same settings.

I ran 10x18s on the back with 265/35 tyres, but with slightly different offset you can get 285's on the back and possibly wider. Rick is experimenting at the moment with fronts and I think is up to 245 or 255. To be honest the cars drive better on 17" wheels with 968 ClubSport size tyres and in fact they might be better yet on 16" rims. With wide 18's they are over-tyred.

Thanks Fen,
How much would a new head gasket be?
As regards wheels,i have just aquired another 944 turbo, this one being a 86 model, with fuchs on it,and it looks stunning, the wheels really fill the arches.I suppose i could just keep the 86 and sell the 89,but the 89 is the better spec!
I have got to sell one of them,so is anyone interested in a 944 turbo in red?
Thanks,
Andrew.

Hi Andy

I see you have the boost enhancer fitted.[:D]

I have OEM Cup 2's off a 968 CS running 225 front 255 rear.

Will send you a pic so you can see how it looks

Cheers

Lee

Andrew.

A new head gasket is cheap but will require about 10 man-hrs to replace, so around £800 at a specialist - unless you're going to do it yourself. You can buy head gasket kits which include all sorts of other gaskets for you to replace while you're in there. When my head gasket goes I've got my eye on a Cometic gasket which is a multilayer gasket of stainless steel sheets. It's very expensive - £100 (or about $80 from the states) but money well spent on a turbo in my opinion. Ideal if you want to run higher boost. You can also go for a Widefire gasket which is a bit like a standard gasket but the piston ring seal is thicker on one side (why only on one side is a mystery to me!) however I have read a large number of reports about these gaskets not being much cop and I personally am steering clear.

Thanks for the pictures Lee.I have seen a picture of the rare 968 turbo with 18 inch alloys that really fill out the arches.Thats the look i am after. It is a shame that the fuchs of my 86 wont fit,as they look stunnung!
Thanks,
Andrew.
