Wheels.... give me a honest opinion please.

My (black) s2 is currently running on excellent condition 993 16in alloys with the appropriate spacers and good tyres all round. I don't "dislike" them but I do prefer the original D90s on the car.

Having failed with a couple of enquiries for CS wheels, I'm going to have a look at D90s in Bonnybridge this weekend :).

However, I'd like to get the wheels refurb'd as per the photo. However, I find it difficult to imagine how they would look when fitted (wonderful I'd hope!).

I'd welcome comments - good or bad. Thanks.

Sort of like this:

To me they suit the design of the S2 and Turbo, with the later bodywork. I don't like them on early cars, and I don't like later design wheels at all. Why try to make a design that's very much of it's time look like something it's not?

993 alloys are these....

I'm sure the D90s will be great but it was really an opinion on the colour styling for the refurbed alloy as in the initial post and what it would look like on my black car.....

i have some just refurbed d90 turbo forged alloys and tyres 7 at the front 9 at the rear. These are available if interested. I would be interested in your 993 alloys if genuine so i can use them in the winter on my 993 (give the 18 turbo twists a clean then)

Make sure the D90's are 8" rear, 7" front. Mine came with 6" front from 964. I have bought 7" fronts awaiting refurb and fitting.

The wheels in your pic look good with diamond cut edge, have seen this style fitted to VW's with very low profile rubber, not sure it would suit 944 with bigger profile or worth additional expense.

Cheers Alan.

I think that coloured wheels are very much a matter of opinion. I'm with Rob and Paul in that D90's are the right wheel for the car with later bodywork (the only thing to better them is 17inch Cup1's), but coloured D90's ... some people like 'em, some people don't.

The ones you posted the picture of have greenish centres. Would you go for this particular colour for your set, or just be thinking about the coloured centre/polished rims notion generally?

(I think that it was Paul Smith who put some black D90's on his turbo, and has some photos of it. That looked pretty good I thought ...)

On a black car I think you need either black or silver wheels, anything else just doesn't look right to me.

Be wary of diamond cut lips, the chances are you'll be needing them redone every few years and its not cheap. It only needs one stone chip in the laquer and eventually the water will get underneath and give you that classic waterstained look [:'(]

I prefer the look of the D90s to the wheels you have on at the moment. Personally I would keep them OEM silver.

AS this chap says ... but I could countenance something a little darker than OEM silver. Something like a pale graphite/slate-esque colour. And if you could have them finished in matt (as opposed to gloss) it could look pretty good. (And not show the brake dust, either!)

Whole heartedly agree with much of this , super modern wheels on older car = no no . Really old wheels on later 944 = no no

On an S2 or turbo for me it's D90's in Silver of Graphite ish , cups look good ( proper cup 1 or 2 ) not ' cup 3 '

Worst look for me is later Carrera twists etc on a 944 they just tlook so out of place.

All taste and opinion I know but thats mine.

P.S my old 80's Retro Asev alloys looked damn fine on a 944 [:D]

Best of luck

Mas

Thanks to everyone for their input/replies.

The sample photo I lifted from the internet of refurb'd D90s was based on "anthracite powdercoated centres with a diamond cut and laquered rim" although the picture/colour may not be entirely clear. If I was buying tired D90s then I quite like the look of this refurb but I take on board the comments re the rim and probably have been put off this now.

I am very glad I did post this question because it's inadvertently brought other wheels to my attention!! I'm currently making some enquiries..... [:)]

Nicely summed up Mas, my view too. Also, chromed D.90's would be very wrong IMHO
I'm not a fan of black wheels either, but of course there are exceptions, bennyboy's being one of them, the contrast of the polished rim makes all the difference [8D]
