Wheels..... Help Please

Guest

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me what wheels and tyres will fit on a 944s 1987 as I wish to upgrade both but not sure what will be best. What about 16" boxster wheels ? Obviously I need them to fit straight on with no messing about or spacers. Any help would be gratefully received as usual

Thanks

1987 with the ABS offset or without. That was changeover year. What offset are the wheels you have on just now?

1987 without ABS I have standard Porsche Tele dials at the mo

205/60/R15 Front
215/60/R15 Rear

Thanks

It might still have the ABS offset, even without the ABS being fitted. It was a change made across the range in 1987 to alter the steering geometry so that ABS could be fitted in some markets / on some models. The difference is quite significant with the hub face being a good 2" further outset on the ABS style cars.

On your existing wheels is there a marking either side of the valve stem? It will be 15 on one side and another number on the other. That other number is the offset.

No numbers that I can see.............stupid question[8|] but I presume you check with the wheels on the car? The only other possibility is the spare which I will check in the morning if that has no numbers then what?

Cheers

ok I will let you no if I decide to change them and put the tele dials up for sale they all have brand new tyres on them (Only done 300 miles)

Unfortunately the Teledials don't come with the sizes stamped by the valve. Porsche didn't start doing this until the Design 90's came out.

I'm not sure if they are stamped on the back but it may be worth taking one off and having a look. The earlier non-abs ones will have an offset of 23.3 mm or ET23. The abs wheels have an offset of 52.3mm or ET52

There is lots of good info on Dannos site http://members.rennlist.org/951_racerx/ in the section marked 944 Wheels FAQ

hi,

I have checked my spare which has ET42 stamped inside would this be the same for the tele dials? and is this my offset for all the wheels or just the spare?

Thanks

Pete

No that is just for the spare. Teledials have the size, offset and part number embossed on the back of the spokes inside the wheel, so you will have to take one off.

IIRC, '86-'87 cars that don't have ABS offset have the deeper dish teledials and later '87 cars with ABS offset have the flatter teledial wheels. If your spokes are set inbound by about an inch from the rim then they are likely to be non ABS (ie ET23) and if the spokes sit about flat with the rim in the middle then they are likley to be ET52.

Hope that helps!

Success on the offset problem you were right I had the chassis number checked out and that confirmed the later offset of 47 - Front & 52 - Rear also your note concerning the tele dial distance was cool as mine are flush with the edge of the rim.......so many thanks[:)]
