Wheels Off - Help

Since I am having to take the wheels off to clear the crap out of the discs I want to get the two front balanced as I have an intermittent (and inconsistent) wobble at about 55 mph.

Question. Where do I put the axle stands to support the front while I do this?

Thanks

try at the edge of the wisbone/chassis area....make sure it is solid and not suspension component that may give when the weight of the car is put on it.

make sure you get the whels dynamically balanced....weights on the inside...probably not a quik fit type job..

if you are having problems with jacking the car up....should you be doing it? :) easy job to take to a decent tyre specialist....
wheel bolts torqued back to 95 ft lb or 130 nm when you re-fit

No probs jacking it and getting the wheels off but I wondered if there was a specific point which should be used to support the car as there is no mention of it in the manual. The wishbone must be the favourite area as this is designed to support the car anyway....

I've never put mine on axle stands but from lifting it, there's quite a decent area next to the rear jacking points that would be used for the arms of a two post lift. I should think these would be fine for stands. The front would be the wishbone area most probably.

I had my wheels balanced at kwik-fit last week and they did a great job. The machine had been calibrated the day before; apparently they have them calibrated every month. It even had an extending arm that they put the weight onto, moved it until the screen went green and then lifted it to contact the inside of the wheel. It all seemed really accurate and certainly has made a difference.

Regards

Thanks - this is all very helpful. I really don't want to take the whole car in as our local tyre shops are not very careful (RS Tyres or Kwik-Fit) but they can balance a wheel properly.

While the wheels are off, I will also get all the dirt off the inner rim including the old glue patches etc and try and get some polish on them. What's the betting it starts raining soon?

i normally use century tyres near green street green close to orpington.... not too far from you???
.they know what they are doing with the correct and lead me to believe they do the tyre work for paul devyea........patron is a miserable $%£& though!

i had a wheel wobble on a 968CS that i used to track,,,kwik fit balanced them and it was no better,,,,,i was directed to this century tyres lot who sorted them...not been anywhere near kwik fit since!

Your car is looking good Maurice, nice to see in P/post you have got rid of those diddy brakes in the picture...whats next????

Going well....haven't driven it much...sorted varioram..new egg box as i mentioned and refurbed my first speedline split rim to scure a leak in the last week.......all ready for bedford trackday on saturday afternoon.

Funny old world isn't it. Maurice comes up with what I fancied but didn't think would work and I wasn't going to do it only to find I would have to undo it again - far too hot. (and its raining..) Thanks clubsport - I will go to them then.

I am amazed at the rust in the discs though. Dirt I expected and corrosion but not a very healthy coating of rust. I though they would be like the side of the rails that trains run on. New they rust like b******s but after a few weeks they seem to lose it all and just go dull grey/black.
