Wheels

My turn to ask the questions - recently a sonofa****h slashed the sidewall of one of my rear tyres leaving me with a big problem, as you can imagine.
This was compounded by a couple of things - 1 - one of my fronts was needing replaced and 2 - I didn't really want to spend loadsa money on new tyres if I wasn't using the car in the winter.

So, I had a look around and found a set of wheels and tyres from a 911 which were at the right price, thought I'd done my homework but alas, it has turned out to be one of my more expensive mistooks as on fitting they foul the suspension arm or something.

Can anyone help me here?

Original Rear Wheels are coded 987 362 13800 and 10J 18 ET 43 Tyres are 265/40 18's

I have replacements coded 996 362 14001 A and 10J 18 ET 65A Tyres are 285/30 18's

Do I need -

Spacers? (size would be helpful)
A 911? (if money were no object)
Brain surgery? (wife says I'm brainless anyway so they'd find nothing)

Or do I just need to sell them and get proper wheels?

Answers please!

Andrew

Andrew, Can't comment on the Wheel issue but I may have another solution. I have a used set of tyres from my ex Boxster which i was going to sell anyway. They all have tread on them slightly above the wear markers. They are Michelin Pilot Sports F 225/40 ZR18 R 265/35 ZR18. All four can be collected for £50 if you are interested. Mail me if you want them robin.mears1@btinternet.com.

Hi Robin, thanks for the generous offer. I have since investigated Jasmine Porsche (?) stuff and found spacers which should do the trick. Andrew

Andrew, As you have no doubt already discovered, the clue is in the offset - the ET number. A wheel with an offset of 65mm will sit 22mm further in that a wheel with an offset of 43mm - hence your fouling problem.. The solution is a spacer of exactly 22mm. Another potential problem is the tyre size. A 285/30 tyre is substantially smaller in circumference than a 265/40 - 6.12% smaller to be precise - and thius is likely to cause your ABS system some problems. Regards Dave

Thanks guys, great information. Jasmine Porschalink sorted me out with 18mm spacers and longer bolts which appear to do the job - time will tell. Dave, hope the ABS doesn't take a flakey and as I have put on a whole matching set I would think there would be no mismatch to worry about. As you say, the tyre size is slightly smaller. For the assistance of others this tyre size calculator is useful : http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html Peter, thanks for the insurance note, will be contacting them on that matter - it's easy to forget this is a relevant change to the car. BTW, car looks the business on the new wheels! Andrew
