When did the oil tank move from 1972 to 1973 position?

Two questions for all you knowledgable 911 buffs

1/ When exactly did the oil tank move from the 1972 position to the 1973 position (I am guessing around August/September 1972)? What would the last chassis number be for the 1972 position?

2/ Did the side light and horn grills change from the chrome/ali look to black at the same time?

Thanks.
Ian.

I think this is going to take a little research to answer. Hopefully I'll have something by tomorrow.

Out of interest . . . why are you asking?

Thanks for taking this on.

It's because I have a 911E registered Autumn 1972 (I don't have the V5 in front of me for the exact date) that doesn't have the oil tank in the 1972 position.

Therefore I am assuming it is a 1973 spec car except this car has been a track car and could quite easily have been changed over the years (as I know it has been crunched a few times) hence my question on chassis numbers for the 1972 configuration.

The follow on for that was the question of the chrome vs black side lights and horn grills. As I now also use the car on the road I have just replaced my old broken items with new black trim items. I want to make sure they are correct for my car chassis number as I have the chance to change them to chrome look before I use the car again.

The car has aluminium window surrounds and I think I am correct that 1973 spec cars (assuming mine is) are the only ones with aluminium window surrounds and black side light and horn trims.

The model year change occurs in July/August. The 73 model cars had the tank behind the wheel and have VINs starting 9113******, they also had black horn grills/lens surrounds. 72 MY cars have VINs starting 9112******. The other change was the gear lever base. The 73 cars have a large cylindrical housing rising some 3" above the tunnel, the 72 cars have the earlier, conical housing

Ta Nick.

Chassis number confirms my car is a 73 spec model and therefore now has the correct black horn grills/lens surrounds. Car also has the 73 gear lever base.

Thanks again.

Ian.
