does anyone know the answer to this ?

i read somewhere that it was February 1992. However mine is a June '92 (J plate) and i've seen someone on the forum who has a k reg (so must be post 1st august '92)

if it was february, maybe mine was one that was hanging around the dealer that they couldn't sell [:(]

I don't remember, but I'd have thought earlier than that. The very last were made by Porsche at Zuffenhausen whereas the others (even my '92 J Cab) were built by Audi at Nekarsulm. There is an N or a Z in the chassis number so you can tell.

The last of them did hang around for a while. The 968 was announced / launched in late '93 and it was difficult to shift the last S2's. Even the 968 hardly sold well. Times were hard back then.

I seem to remember that the OPC's were discounting the last 944's to sub 30K when they had 968's on the showroom floor. There was also a small run of late models with 243BHP engines.

I'm pretty sure the last S2s rolled off the line in summer 1991. 968 production started after the works holiday in 1991 as a 1992 model, although it wasn't launched in the UK until about May 1992.

You can tell the model year from the 10th digit of the VIN (L=1990, M=1991 etc). Also as Fen pointed out the last cars were built at Zuffenhausen - the 11th digit will be an S rather than an N if this is the case.

Porsches of all kinds were very slow sellers back then so I wouldn't be surprised if a car sat around unsold for a year. My first 968 sat in a dealership unsold for at least six months when it was new.

Yep common practice when a model is to be run out - my car is on a K Plate registered 20/09/92 and Im sure hung around for a while before being registered.
