Sounds similar to my S2 clutch if I get caught in stop start traffic for a while. The rubber centre in the clutch deteriorates over time and gets 'juddery' like this when really hot. I know mine will eventually fail but it has been like this for 9 years now.

(Just realised we have had our S2 for exactly nine years on the 9th - [:)][:)][:)][:)] best thing we ever bought)

What do you mean when you go from neutral to 1st? Do you mean when you select first gear and engage the clutch the shaking and rattling starts when the clutch starts to take up, or do you mean the shaking and rattling starts as soon as you select first gear with the clutch depressed?

As others have said, I wouldn't be especially worried about this if it's only when it's hot. Mine certainly did it, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't perfect when the clutch was changed either.

I have a different problem now, mine judders in a similar manner if I dont rev match when I change down into second, hot or cold. The clutch is fairly recent so I will have to have this looked at sometime soon [].

Best regards,
Peter

Thanks tyo everyone for taking time to give me info.

Indeed, if Im in traffic for a while, in neutral for eg, when i press clutch change to first, release the cluth and rev a little, if i dont rev enough, the back yes, rattles and it seems the back wheels don't grip, whtaever they have to grip, it's not a major prob, but i just wanted to know.

so clutch it is then

and 9years like that isn't too bad i guess, i ll try that then.

good luck pete with that new clutch.

ages ago, i got a new clutch fitted for a golf 3 , and the so called mechanic, hadn't done something properly, and it rattled a little, problems to go to reverse etc ... it was sorted by another mechanic for almost nothing.

I have the same problem too on 1st gear only when the car is ruuning hot/at traffic. I have to rev a bit harder to get rid of the rattles and shakes.

~CHARLEY

that is exactly what i have to do as well, rev it harder to enable it to grip.

at least, im not the only one : )

thanks for the suppport..
