Where can I find my engine number

Hey guys got a questions for you.

Where on earth can I locate my engine number on my 1986 944. I know its on the back of the engine block, but I just cant find it.

If any one has a picture on where I can locate it that would be great.

Thanks for all your help.

Stand next to the driver's side wing looking at the cam cover. See where the "P" is on the raised "PORSCHE" and look below it down the side of the engine, you'll see the engine ID tab sticking out.

Hey guys
Thanks for the reply, first of all! However, I still can't find the engine number. I have checked the back of the engine where the red arrow is on top where the bell housing meets the back of the engine. Only number I found there was 046.01..which was not the engine number, according to my mechanic. And I've checked down the length of the engine (where the blue arrow is in the picture), underneath the raised 'P' and I can't find any markings.

So if anybody any other instructions or any idea what the heck I'm doing wrong, please let me know!

Thanks a lot, guys!

I believe the engine number was stamped on the left side of the engine (red arrow) until model-year 1987, by which it was printed on the right side (blue arrow).
Your car being an '86 the engine stamping should be where the red arrow points.
However, it's quite dificult to spot as the wiring harness goes over, probably the reason they moved it to the other side 1987-on.

Afternoon every one.

Still having issues finding my engine number. The picture below is all I can see when I look down the back of my engine bay.

The number written their is 046.01 however my mechanic says. What he has told me is that the number should be m044.xx however I have looked high and low and cant find this.

Is the number he told me to look for the wrong one? And if so how many numbers should the engine number be?

Thanks again guys for all your help.

The Car is an 1986 oval dash 944 basic.

However I know that the engine was replaced 7 years ago. So this is why my mechanic is asking me for the engine number since we need to order seals for the car.

The thing is I looked down the side of the engine, underneath the raised P, where the number is located on the later models and I do see very slight grinding marks. Could it be that the number was ground off when the engine was changed in?

I'm getting a big annoyed cause I want my car back on the road.

So any bright idea will be great.

:D

You don't say where you are in your profile, but if you can get to the Ace Cafe tomorrow evening then you will be able to have a look inside a few engine bays to see where it should be? [8|]

Hey guys

Thanks for the invite however I don't live in the U.K. I am living out in Cyprus these days and my mechanic live in a different down and has now room to keep my car until he has room to fix it.

So if any one can tell me what the engine number looks like or is their some reference number some where, where I can obtain the number from.

I am totally lost.

Again thanks for the invites.

:)

Thanks for the invite however I don't live in the U.K. I am living out in Cyprus these days and my mechanic live in a different down and has now room to keep my car until he has room to fix it.

No excuse, people travel from all over the world to the Ace!

How well does the mechanic know the cars? It might help if he posts here exactly where he's looking. Does he know the engines inside out?

Heh I'll bring the car next time, to Ace (once I get her fixed)

My mechanic has been dealing with Porsche for over 25 years now, could strip and rebuild one of these engines with his eyes closed.

However like I said he live in another town and its like 3 hours from where I live, and I cant take the drive the car to him, because the water pump gasket and the cam gasket have started leaking a lot. And we want to order the replacement set. The thing is he want the engine number to give it to the people he knows at fvd to make sure that the send the right set out to us.

He's telling me where to look, however I have only had the car a few months now, and I am still not totally familiar with the engine bay layout, so thats why I am getting lost looking for the engine number. Plus I don't know how many digits it is. He tells my it should start M044.xx, just wondering if theirs another number printed some where that would also lead us to find the Engine number.

I don't like being a pain, but I am really lost. As I said earlier the engine isn't the original and this was placed in about 8 years ago. look in both places for the engine number back of the engine and down the side of the block under the raised 'P' and still cant find it.

So I'm stubbed

Do you get registration documents like we do in England when you buy the car? The engine number etc is on there

Well Donny we do have registration documents like in the UK, however the thing is since the engine was changed out we are trying to verify that the number on the documents mach whats in the engine bay now.

I found this stamped on the back of the engine near the bell housing 41E08922 however I'm not sure what this number is.

I'm thinking I'm just gonna have to cart the car down to my mechanic and then bring it back once he has gotten the number from the block.

I have searched high and low for it and unless the number I stated above is it, then I have no clue where this number is.

However I just want to thank every one again for all their help and information.

I'm gonna keep hunting.

Thanks again.

Just to let every one know I finally found my engine number.

Although now I wish I hadn't. I always knew that my car had had an engine replacement, however i didn't know that the engine that was put would be an 84 edition. I'm a bit of a puritan and would have been happier with at least an 86 one.

Oh well guess I will have to put up with it till the 2.7 arrives.

Any how thanks to every one for their help :D

Cheers!

Was working in Cyprus last week, could have popped over for a look, but good to know you found it now, which side was it on? on an 86iirc it is on the block below the exhaust manifold.

Do you know of any breakers yards in Cyprus? I am after some 1995 Nissan Patrol bits and they look a lot healthier in the Cyprus climate (Radiator and brake bits).

Cheers,
Tony

Hey Tony

Thanks for the offer, would have been most appreciated at the time. [:)]

As for breakers yards..... well we do have but its one of those things that if you don't know some one who knows them then they'll rip you a new one.

If you want post me a list of what you need, I can give it to my mechanics and see what they come back with and cost. The only issue will be the shipping cost in the end.

Let me know if this works for you.

Cheers

Mike

Thanks,
Shame I didn't pick up my emails! usually looking for something to do in the evenings or on the way to the airport! Went geocaching last week to kill some time.
Will mail you a list in a day or so, I or one of my colleagues will be back in three months if not before so shipping not so much of an issue, but thinking about it a patrol radiator might not fit in a suitcase!
Tony
