Where do I begin??

Hello everyone,
I'd like to be involved with the Porche owners club, but there is one small problem which I have! At the moment I don't have a Porche, but I want to sell my 1 year old Nissan Primera SE (very nice family car, but borring would be an understatement!), borrow some money from the Bank Manager and buy something for around £16,000 (if thats possible?). Not really sure where to start looking, or even what to look for, when I do start looking! At what point would you say that a car has done too many miles to be a worthwhile purchase (if it has a full service history etc). As I've already said earlier I don't have a huge budget available to me, but I'd really like one of those Carrera thingies.

Any advice will be greatfully received

Many thanks

David

You're in 964 territory.

Hello David,

With that sort of money you could get a late 944 Turbo and have a few mods done. You could then be looking at a 300-400 bhp car which isn't going to bite back, well not too much.

Alternatively an unmodified 968. Take you pick from Standard, Sport (lighter), Club Sport (lighter still, but no back seats) or Cabriolet. There was an article in the Sunday Times about a year back the proclaimed the 968 CS as the ultimate track day car. Can't be bad.

On the whole condition should be far more important than mileage, most £16K Porsches are going to have been driven. There are a few components that might want changing post 100K but they are very limited - eg water pump on 944, the turbo its self could be a worry after 150K but then you would be replacing that to get your 400+ bhp[;)]

Don't make any decisions until you've been to a few Porsche events and seen a few cars.

Welcome to the club.

David,

Welcome to the forum!
Can I point out that you can join the club without a Porsche? You would be an associate member. This way you would get the excellent magazine every month with literally hundreds of cars for sale listed within.

I wish I had known I could do this before I bought my first one.

David, welcome to the forum as Mark has already said you don't need to own a Porsche to become a member.
you don't say which part of the country you live.but as you posted in the Essex part of the forum im guessing your an Essex man. i would suggest you go along to your local meeting or a PCGB event and talk to the people there im sure they will be happy to show you around their cars and tell you the things to look out for when buying.

Essex meet,2nd tuesday of the month at The regiment way Golf center. contact Martyn (click on the envelope above his name)the moderator for more details

Welcome from me too David, I think firstly you have to decide which model you really lust after. Porsche ownership is addictive whichever model you choose you won't be easily persuaded out of it so take your time and make the right choice based on passion and not money. Having said that if your choice is a 911 as I believe it well maybe as you mentioned the magical 'Carrera' word, then 16K would but you a lovely Carrera 3.2. Get a PPI from someone recommended by PCGB such as Peter Morgan

David

As you can see we're a friendly bunch at Essex, I'm new to the club myself. Don't be afraid to take time looking around before you buy, it's time well spent. I had a very clear view of what i wanted when i bought my car, only a 3.2 Carrera would do. I spent just over £11k buying my LHD 1984 car and it's been great.

If you come down to the club you'll meet up with an enthuisiastic bunch of car nuts, no-one will be "off" if you don't have a car yet, or loads of money to spend. The club is made up of the full spectrum of cars and people. So don't be shy, get in touch with some of us and come and see the cars first. We all have our favourites so you'll get lots of opinions!!

Look forward to seeing you along at a club night.

Nigel

Hi Dave,

I think you'll find the club pretty freindly, I know I was a little cautious at first having read a great deal about some attitudes portrayed as being part of Porsche ownership.
I found everyone to be pretty approachable and talkative, I've only broken my cherry recently so can speak from good experience.

I'll be there this May meet, can't miss me youngish and going grey, just like the inside of my car...................give me the heads up and I'll show you round the car and give you some pointers............

When & Where do the club meet?

Meetings are at:-

The Regiment Way Golf Centre
Back Lane/Pratts Farm Lane
Off Essex Regiment Way
Nr. Little Waltham

Essex Regiment Way is the A130 between Chelmsford & Great Dunmow.

51.779N 0.484E

Meetings are the second Tuesday of every month from 8:00pm.

Now the sun is out, and the gritting lorries have been put to bed, we get a lot of cars to look at so it could we be worth comming along. There is nothing like speaking to a few people who own, or have owned, you chosen car to get a handle on what to look out for. You could save your PCGB membership many times over on your first car.

OT - Why "flyingdogguitar" ???

Check the autotrader website. There was, as recently as last week, a 924 carrera GT (210 bhp), which will leave you change from your £16k. The numbers are something like 60 in 5.9 and v max 152. Also being a rare (75 in r h d) model this should at least retain it's value if not actaully appreciate. being 924 derived, some engine components are commercially available at reasonable cost, but the gearbox is the 016z pattern which means that first is to the left and back, great fun when you swap between the turbo, which is the same, and the lux, which is conventional. If I had sixteen large it would already be sold.

I checked this out again yesterday, it's still there at £15,500, gleaming black coachwork, 20,000 miles on the clock.

I had a very clear view of what i wanted when i bought my car, only a 3.2 Carrera would do. I spent just over £11k buying my LHD 1984 car and it's been great.

That sounds a great price nigelp. Where did you get it from ? Was it an exceptionally trustworthy find ? [;)][;)]
