Where do I find my engine code?

When shopping for mechanical parts I keep getting confronted with two different engine codes and I dont know which one I have.

Today whilst looking for a Dansk exhaust they list one for a 2.7 (Eng code M44.12) and another part number for a 2.7 (Eng code M44.11). So how do I figure out which engine code mine is; M44.12 or M44.11?

Here's a shot of my new engine. You'll see a tab stamped into the block on the left of the engine just below the head as you are looking at it. In the engine bay it will be in the driver's side part of the engine at the rear:

Id be interested to know what the practical difference is (as the .11 & ,12 are identical as fare as Im aware), especially if youre only looking for a rear box.

Thanks for the pointer ChasR. It's not easy to see with the engine in the car, but with a torch I could just about make it out. Mine's a M44.11[:)]

I've got no idea why the Dansk catalogue has different part numbers for .11 and .12 engines if they are the same. The catalogue shows;

Dansk Rear box 705330140 fit...
2.5L (82-91) (eng. M44.01-08 + M44.10)
2.7L (89-91) (eng. M44.12)

Dansk Rear box 705330065 fits...
2.5L (87-88) (eng. M44.09 +M44.40)
2.7L (89-91) (eng. M44.11)
3.0L 89-91 (eng.M44.41)

Anyone know where's a good place to buy one of these from?

M44/11 manual gearbox, M44/12 automatic gearbox.

PET shows a difference between center and rear section of the exhaust, no idea why they're different though.
