Where do people sell their cars ?

Hi folks,
Thinking of getting myself a 944 in the next few months.
I did consider it about 18 months ago, but it didn't happen then for various reasons.

Now I'm in the market again, and have spent a week or so searching places like these forums, autotrader, ebay (yes, I know, but I've been lucky with my last 3 car purchases on ebay !)

I did try to join the titanic list again, but havent managed to do that yet .. is it still up & running ?

So, basically, where is a good place to find a reasonably priced oval dash 2.5 ?

Is a budget of around 2.5k to 3k reasonable ?

All pointers welcome :)

Cheers, and happy new year :)

If I may be so bold on the 944 forum, with a sub-£3K budget why not consider a 924S? (I prefer the purer 924 shape personally and actually think it's aged better) and there are some great deals out there as they are sadly undervalued. Lots of good advice on here re the trouble spots. Good luck.

oooooh, that it quite bold ;)

to be honest, I don't really care for the 924 interior.
I know the later 924S (with the higher 160? bhp) is actually quicker than the 944 in a straight line, is it the aerodynamics ?
I just prefer the later oval dash interior.
(I had the 924 interior before, and have "fond" memories of replacing the complete carpets, seats, doorcards, etc etc)

So, i think I'll stick with the 944 this time. Yes, they are twice the price, and probably twice the import tax over here (Irish Republic) but I'll try it & see.

The 944 does have slightly worse drag than the 924 as it's wider, but I think the main difference is due to the fact that they're also lighter. Saying that the 2.5L engine in the 924S is detuned so there shouldn't be much in it (a quick google also suggest that the 5th gear was shorter).

In my opinion the 924 looks rather under nourished and more dated, but I guess you knew I'd say that [;)]

Titanic is still going strong, if joining via the website doesn't work you could contact Diver944 as I think he's able to help.

My '86 924S (~150hp) definitely had a shorter 5th gear than my '88 924S (~163 hp).
whether the '86 was original (I suspect it had been round the clock twice [:D] ) I couldn't tell you.

They were both lovely cars to drive - in many ways better than the 951. Both handled trackday abuse but were really too slow and soft. I much prefer the 924's looks, but the later interior is definitely a nicer place to be. The 924 is a tight fit for larger drivers - The 4 spoke lozenge wheel is better for thigh clearance than the 3 spoke wheel.

- I was half tempted by Lali's 924S with 968 running gear - just a bit steep for me at 8k though

Declan, don't want to push it too hard (I know I already mentioned this in your thread on the TIPEC forum), but I have a good '87 944 Lux for sale in Glasgow, within your budget. I've recently realised that its MOT is due sooner than I thought, so it'll be getting whatever it needs to put it through that very soon "¦ which should make it a fantastic buy once it's done.

Interesting :) I'll keep it in mind

Sorry Peter - my late '87 924S (currently up for sale...) is definitely not de-tuned. I also have an '88 944 and it is not so sprightly. The engine numbers are from the same '88 batch and are less than 300 numbers different.

That's interesting, I was under the impression they ran slightly lower compression on the 924S engines giving about 150bhp compared to the 944's 163bhp?

This really is a great car.

Does look good, but I'd prefer a manual box. - Thanks for the pointer though.

And didn't the 924S get the same bhp as the 944 towards the end of production - for the last year mabye ?

That's right - the '88 MY cars were 163 bhp

As I understand it, although the earlier cars were quoted at 150 bhp, they actually made a bit more - IRO 155. The lower output compared with the 944 was a result of a lower CR, which was changed in the 88 model (which also ran the later 28 pin DME AFAIK, and had inertia reel rear belts [:D])
