Where has the optimax gone

Hi all
Fuel tank down on quarter, tried five shell stations, all locked off and empty! This is Southampton / Winchester area. Anyone else had problems? Is this due to the Hemel Hempstead oil refinery fire? Is anyone using a good alternative? Or are we all going to be queuing in Tesco's
Regards
Steve

Yes I believe it is due to the Hemel incident. Around this area (20-30 miles north of HH) I can't find Optimax for love or money. Luckily I don't need fuel yet but give it 150 miles and I think I'll be heading for Tesco to try their 99 fuel. At least if the Optimax has not been restocked by then.

Shell at Leadenhall MK had an Optimax delivery today. Apparently all the Shell tankers have been used for non-Optimax deliveries lately creating the Optimax shortage. Hopefully the problem should be pretty much over and done with now.

Regards

Dave

did any of you read the fuel comparison article in last month's evo mag - it tested normal unleaded (shell and bp) and higer octane (optimax, bp ultimate and tesco 99) against each other and in two different cars (Golf gti and BMW M5) with dyno read outs - surprisingly enough the bp ultimate was a fair bit ahead of the optimax golf optimax 209bhp and 242lb versus 212bhp and 252lb for ultimate (normal bp unleaded was 204bhp and 242lb) the tesco 99 results were 212bhp and 242lb. a very interesting article and what it did find out is that results differed station to station even with the same brand of fuel - they discovered that the better fuel came from a busier station as the higher octane fuel goes off quite quickly! - any way have a read its in the Jan06 issue of evo.

Shell lost several tankers at Buncefield so until they're replaced, the remaining ones are moving regular unleaded and diesel only. The owner of my local Shell garage reckons normal service should be resumed by the end of next week ... he thinks.

What were the price comparisons like between Tesco, Shell and BP. It sounds like Tesco 99 is after all a good alternative.Or like John says sit and wait.
Thanks guys
Steve

Buncefield was a strategic store for Optimax supplies.

Most of the countries Optimax is produced at Stanlow refinery in the North West - they are on overtime at present, just trying to keep up with unleaded demand (again after Buncefield and Xmas demand), so Optimax is a low priority on their work schedule. Most cars will run on unleaded.

Prices were (at time of test) 91.9p for shell 95, 89.9p for bp 95, 95.9p for optimax, 93.9p for tesco 99 and 100.9p for bp ultimate. Although the prices will undoubtedly have changed the diffferences between them should remain constant. Have not seen Tesco 99 yet round Stafford area as apparently its mainly down south (although if any of you do come across it in the Birmingham area please let me know as I'd like to give it a try)
