Where the oil from?

Hi, washed the car yesterday and the rear end from the bottom of the engine cover to the bumper, had what seems like oil over the paintwork. it took a while to get off and was quite sticky. Is this normal? I cant see any leaks from the car i.e no oil on the floor and the engine itself is clean. The car doesn't seem to use much oil, i have put 1 litre in over around 3500 miles, does this sound ok?

Thanks

Quick answer is: "I think most of it comes from the Middle East these days ;-)" Seriously though, if its on the outside, then most likely from the car in front.

Thanks, had a good laugh at the first paragraph. But the oil is on the rear not the front!! So assumed it was coming from the engine somewhere or the exhaust.

Hmm.. but judging by the state of the rear of mine after driving on the wet, salty roads yesterday, most of what the car picks up from the road sticks to the back . (And rear wheel arches). If there are no drips, no hot oil smell, no blue smoke and you're not using more than normal then.......see second post? I bet someone will have a better suggestion though![:)]
