Hi there,

Im now in the position of changing my current car to a 996 LHD - Im leaving the UK in a few months and under Portuguese customs law ( im portuguese btw ) I can bring a car home and slap a portuguese license plate and pay 0% on vat and on car tax ( usually 17%, so big big savings here )

So I managed to gather 25k to buy a 996 lhd which will be my daily driver in Portugal.

But my quest is - where to start ? I've seen LHDPORSCHES.COM and LHDVEHICLES... also a few on autotrader and pistonheads.. LHDporsches say they can source the car for me but.. anyone with experience with them ? Checked eporsch and 911virgin but no luck there for LHD.

Anyone got a 996 LHD to sell ? Triptonic prefered but manual is a go as well.

Whats the best place to source a lhd ? Thank you for you help

Hi there,
Purchased my used LHD 2003 996 4S in Germany as a Porsche factory ex company car. Even managed to get the German VAT refunded. Car was immaculate.

Hi Proença,
Just remember that the car has to be in your possession at least for 6 months and you have to prove that you worked and got payed every month of the last 24 that you spent in the UK. That was the law a few years ago when I tried something similar to what you´re planning ( I´m also portuguese, the english is just for the guys in the forum.)
As for the search for a German car, make sure that the law doesn´t require that you register the car in the country that you´re living in before birnging it to Portugal.
I went to Germany a couple of years ago and bought a 2003 C2 from a Porsche Dealer - Dusseldorf - very nice guys, with Porsche Warranty that I registered in Portugal but had to pay all taxes.
Feel free to PM me if you need adcional info,

Best wishes

I thought if you bought a car from another EU country, the import duty and VAT stuff only applied to new vehicles and not second hand ones ? I guess I'm wrong there ...

Not in Portugal. The Portugese flout EU law, and do their own thing, based on engine size.

I was allowed to import one car duty free on taking up Residencia in Portugal. If I had had to pay the duty, on a one year old XC90, it would have been 15k euros !!!

Car prices for anything over 1400cc are unbelievable.

Before I bought y 996 I looked and importing from Germany, but by the time youve been to look, fetched it and paid the duty, you don´t really save anything.

Curiously though, the insrance on the 996 is 25% cheaper than the Volvo.
