Where to find reliable good 944

Im after my first Porsche. Want to buy a good 944, willing to spend about £4000 poss more.
Any suggestions?
Recommend a 924??

Can't advise you here i'm afraid, I broke all the rules - I got mine through Exchange & Mart and it was the first one I looked at!

But seriously i'd scour everywhere. Not everyone who is selling a good 944 is a Porsche enthusiast or petrolhead so don't just focus on the specialist sites and dealers and keep a look out in the local paper, Autotrader etc. Ultimately the same rules apply, buy on condition, always carry out an HPI check and if you are not confident in your own abilities get an expert to look the car over before buying. You can either do this by paying whatever organisations there are that send out engineers or you can agree with the seller to drive your car round to the nearest Porsche Specialist for them to take a look. If the seller is not keen on you getting someone in the know to look the car over then walk away because there is every chance he has something to hide.

Good luck.

Why cant you advise here? If you join as a member, are there cars advertised? Can I come along to the events? Would it be worth doing?

I didn't mean I or anyone else cannot advise or even advertise (there is a members sellers section after all), What I was referring to was that I personally did not follow the 'classic' advice that you'll get on this forum, simply because I didn't really do my research before buying my car. I've been extremely lucky but I wouldn't personally advise someone to do what I did, and if I were to buy another Porsche i'd certainly do things differently.

What i'm trying to say is not to exclude all the conventional channels in favour of Specialist websites or dealers as there is a very good chance you'll find a perfectly good car in your local paper as a specialist dealer (and maybe not at specialist dealer premiums). The improtant thing is to make sure you carry out all the proper checks such as HPI, getting a specialist or engineer to look over the car.

Like I said I got my car through Exchange and Mart but in terms of specialist Porsche dealers you could try:-

PCGB forum sellers section
PH Sportscars near Derby - 01332 799 928 (although they seem to have less and less 944's in these days but worth a try)
911 virgin.com
PistonHeads
Various Porsche specialist up and down the country (most seem to have the odd car for sale now and again)
Porsche Post selling section

I'm sure there are many more that others will chip in with but that's off the top of my head.

if you want to be sure of getting a reasonable one you should try Porsche club members or you could try the dealers. 944's are often taken in p/e at least you'll get some sort of warrantee and servicing . Most folk seem to look for one with a good body and interior and budget for some mechanical work so that at the end of the day you know the work has been done.Make sure you take a check list with you (there is one on Rennlist site) and check through everything. Its too easy to be suckered into buying the first car you go see. Ask me how I know this [;)]

I'd recommend buying privately (it will be much cheaper than a dealer) but before buying take it to a local independant Porsche specialist for a full check. Where are you based?

I think you can learn a lot from meeting and speaking with the person who has owned the car.

Best place to find one privately is on this website, Pistonheads website and maybe autotrader. It's also worth joining the Porsche club as there are always quite a few for sale in the back of the monthly magazine.

Don't know whether this will interest you, but I have a 1987 944 Lux for sale up in Glasgow (distance shouldn't really be an issue, I bought it from London originally). Well within your budget, I'm only looking for £3,000 or so, which would leave you plenty of cash for anything you wanted to change or update on the car.

If you're interested in more details, drop me a line on tony@typescape.com - I haven't got around to putting a proper "˜for sale' advert together yet.

Mine will be up for sale in the matter of days now..a 1985 early dash 944 Lux 8V..loads of jobs done in past 6 months/1500 miles(belts+tensioners done less than 100 miles ago)..had a full professional respray in July this year..have a look at my album at http://www.axl.zoomshare.com there's quite a few pics in "Prepearing For Silverstone Classic" album..email me to porsche.944@need4speed.com for more details or give me a ring on 07871457258 if you wanna see/test drive the car..located in Barnsley(South Yorkshire)..
There is a few changes to the car since the pics were taken..15" cookie cutter wheels, checked front seats and a standard steering wheel for example..

Will take some fresh pics over the weekend and upload them to the same site under "1985 Sapphire Metallic 944 Lux"..

My 1989 S2 will be up for sale in a couple of weeks.

Full engine rebuild and many £1000s spent bring up to current standard over last 2 years.

FSH and just had £1k spent in last week on new water pump and replacing cam belts and tensioners.

Car has featured in GT Porsche magazine twice and has something like 28 stamps in the service history.

Well known car and used to belong to another PCGB member who posts on here.

Your budget will buy it....

If your looking for something reliable and to use (was my daily driver before I bought the 996TT) then its a bargain.

PM me if you are interested.

This man speaks sense.

Buy privately BECAUSE you can meet the current owner. Nice people sell nice cars. Look at the car in detail - yes - but look at the owner in just as much detail. Does he strike you as the type who looks after his house/appearance/other things, and from that work out whether he looks after his cars.

I looked at 7 S2's before I bought one, and the one I bought came from Autotrader. It was about 15 miles from where I live, and the owner was very straight, honest and decent. Very happy for me to spend 90 minutes looking at the car and paperwork before even starting it up, and also very happy for me to take it to an indie for inspection.

A decent chap selling a decent car. I still send him photos of it from time to time!

Oli.
