Where to get a 993 windscreen replaced?

A crack is growing at 3 inches a day across my screen, starts at a very small chip (pin head size) on the black at the edge of the screen, invisible from the inside so I had no opportunity to see it early and get it "filled"[]

So I need to bite the bullet and get the screen changed (about time as it has quite a lot of pitting and I'm always surprised when it passes MOT).

This of course means risking damage to the notorious 993 windscreen surround that rusts if you touch it. [8|]

So, do we know anyone who cares about what they are doing and is prepared to spend more than 10 seconds throwing the next screen in the car?

Once I know who I want to do it I'll start battling with the insurance company. . .

Try the OPC first they will be able to point you in the right direction ...i had to get a new screen for the Boxster and went through Auto Windscreens or similar company .But make sure they will use a Porsche approved as most of them use after market screens .Mine was ordered through Glasgow OPC also add a fitting kit .I asked for a technician who has worked on Porsches to do the job ,was done in my garage took around 4hrs and had to leave the screen for 24hrs to bond Was satisfied with the result sorry this is all i can advise.

Nae luck Mark. I've gone through this process several times and come to the conclusion that it's just pot luck. Whoever does it make sure you inspect the aperture carefully for damage before the nee screen goes in.

Good luck.

I agree with this - it comes down to the individual doing the job on the day. I had autoglass do the one on my GT3 and they guys were great and did a brilliant job...but others will have horror stories.

Autoglass did mine on the 997 - guy claimed to have done a variety of supercars BUT...... the screen had to come out due to the horrendous wind noise & the screen protruding about 4 mm in one corner! Got them to replace it in OPC Edinburgh so they could then check it was done right second time around!

I had mine replaced a few years ago using a local glass company as I had heard horror stories about Auto-glass etc. Local guy was not very good and I asked for it to be refitted.

A few pointers.

If possible make sure the replacement screen is a genuine OEM part rather than a pattern one. (I have heard pattern screens are slightly smaller)

Rubber seals and teflon tape are still available from Porsche and not that expensive.

Ensure the ariel lead is not trapped and is properly connected, with radio reception as good as before the replacement screen was fitted.

You will almost certainly find some corrosion. I had my screen fitted at a body shop so once the old screen was removed, remedial work could be done prior to fitting the new screen a few days later.

Make sure the new screen is fitted right in the centre of the aperture, mine wasn't and the screen rubber would fold under on the corner and down one side. I ended up having to pack the rubber with body caulking.
