Where to get brake lines

Hi there,

A quick question: I need to replace the rear right brake line for my 944 turbo ('86). Specificaly, the line that connects the caliper to the ruber brake line.

Any recomendations on where I could get one from, preferably online?

Many thanks,
Alex

It's not exactly a fast moving, high volume part so I doubt there is anywhere that sells them online so you can click on it and it turns up in a few days. Best bet would be to call Chris at Exeter Porsche on 01392 822800 or Bert at www.berlyn-services.co.uk

Alternatively, if you're a good competent mechanic, get yourself 25 foot of 4mm cunifer pipe (3/16"), brake flaring tools, cutter, brake pipe bender and a bag of 11mm ends. Chances are, if your 944 is like mine, the rest of the brake pipes won't be far behind. Over the last two years I've had to replace two pipes at the front four at the back and the long one that goes alll the way down the middle of the car!

If you have to replace most of the pipes it soon works out cheaper to make your own up!

A bit of a naive question, but why should the ends of brake lines (i.e. the bit I've been asking about) be hard and not flexible (rubber)?

Because they need to screw into the brake union and make a seal by slightly squashing the flared end of the brake pipe into the female union.

John, I recently used copper for my front brake pipes as it was easier to obtain. What was working with cunifer like and what brake bending and cutting kit did you use -- I've heard they aren't al up to the job.

I got the cutter and bender and flarer from the same motor factors as the Kunifer. It seems fine to work with and is supposed to last a lot better than copper pipe. Copper pipr is a bit bendier but I had no real problems with the Kunifer.

Go to a decent motor factors to buy the pipe and tools.
