Where to park?

Incept

New member
Hi,

As I guess many of you are, I am a little careful about where I park my pride and joy (993 2S)!

So, as a walker, I've been trying to find a resource on the web which might give advice about where you can park in the countryside with some confidence and have failed miserably!

Therefore, I thought I'd see if any of you were aware of a site that has this type of information, or indeed has any personal suggestions.

We live in East Yorkshire, but love to visit the country all over the North.

If anyone knows where a good and safe place to park is located close to some good walking country, I'd be very grateful of the information.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi

Danby Visitor Centre may be suitable for you, it has a good car park, cafe and visitor centre quite interesting - plus you can access some good walking country. Hutton le Hole car park usually has an attendant, plus there are several cafes and Ryedale folk museum and lots of walking. On the coast, try Raven Hall Hotel, Ravenscar, and cafe just up the road plus access to Scarborough-Whitby railway line and walk to Robin Hood's Bay.

Just a few suggestions - from experience its a problem finding somewhere to park in the North York Moors National Park, especially when you have 10 or more Porsches to accommodate when we have the Whitby run.

Hi and thanks so much!

We're hoping to go somewhere at the weekend, so it's good to have some ideas for then.

Any more thoughts gratefully accepted!

Cheers,

Chris

A bit reluctant to write this post in case it changes my luck!

Totally understand the worry - but part of my reason for getting a 993 was all the fantastic roads I drive to get to Munros around the Highlands (now run out of them and moved on to Corbetts!) - so, having purchased it, I felt a need to use it for getting to the mountains.

So I've now parked it in all sorts of remote places where it has sat for much of a day while we enjoy a few summits...and (touch wood) so far no problem. We did have a police car follow us, lurk around while we put on our boots in the pouring rain, then drive along side as we headed off.... "I'm in the mountain rescue team and I just want to check you are really not going up that hill in this weather?".... but he was persuaded we knew what we were up to and we had a good chat about the car. Other walkers often want to talk about it when we get back at the end of the day.

I'm more concerned about it in Tesco's car park! In more populated areas there is both the disadvantage of more people seeing it and wondering about making off with it, but also the advantage of more people being around to put off a thief.

I'm careful not to park the rear end over dry grass when the exhaust is cooling down from a spirited drive (not that we get much dry grass up here!)

Talking about Yorkshire - you could do worse than park by the Ribblehead Viaduct for a good walk up Whernside (one of the 'three peaks'). There's lots of parking space on both sides of the road just at the junction of the B6255 (Hawes to Ingleton road) & the B6479. Nobody's likely to touch your car there - it's only other sensible walking types who will be parked there.

And as a bonus:
- the Hawes to Ingleton road is a real hoon to drive as is the Buttertubs Pass from Hardraw up to Thwaite, not to mention the road from Garsdale Head over to Kirby Stephen ( in fact the area's full of great driving roads)

Hi all and thanks for all the suggestions.

Please keep them coming.

If we get lots more great suggestions, maybe it would be a good idea to post them as a list.

Cheers,

Chris

Good luck Chris, I had the roof of mine scratched yesterday at Weybourne beach car park in North Norfolk! I'm not a happy boy[:(][:(]

Hi,

You have my sympathy! This is just the sort of thing I'm concerned about.

Still, I can recommend a good body shop if you need one. I had a full cosmetic repaint done some time ago and it was completely brilliant!

Let me know if you need the details. The guy's in Elvington near York but well worth the trip.

Cheers,

Chris
