Where will I find engine & chassis nos?

Starting some viewings this weekend, couldn't find on search so wanted to ask where I'll find the numbers to check against V5? What should they look like so I know they haven't been messed with?

Cheers
Andy

In the right hand scuttle and in the boot there should be a matching sticker to the one in the service booklet. It should state colour, interior choice etc. Obviously it isn't a sticker in the scuttle [:D]

Sorry - from Canada - where is the scuttle? On my 1991 the VIN is stamped on the firewall (left hand drive so its in front of where the heater goes for me). The label in the boot (trunk to us) is missing - of course....

The scuttle is the area we call between the engine and the cockpit where the heater fan sucks it air in from.

Firewall is same thing, or actually more technically accurate as the scuttle is really the bit on top where the wiper mechanism and heater box intake sits, plus of course the battery on LHD cars. Firewall, bulkhead to us.

Thanks Rob and Neil - I love this forum - lots of good information and it's inspiring to see what everyone is up to. I can usually figure out the terminology and orientation but the scuttle had me confounded. Thanks again.

Good luck in your search, hope you find the right one for you

Where its ringed in blue is the chassis number, red arrow point to where you should find the engine number, its at the rear of the block below the cam housing, might need a bit of cleaning to see it.

Cheers for the help guys [;)] I meant to ask you yesterday Rob but I was grinning inside too much from the ride in yours to remember!

Looking at two tomorrow - both white bizarrely! One 1982 S1 looks mint and one S2 Turbo. Opposite ends of the spectrum and really not sure where my heart/head will sit

Cheers
Andy

It is a tough one mate. Nostalgia or bonkers fun. I know which way I would go [;)] Whatever the outcome is I am sure you won't be disappointed.

I'm hoping I'll know once I've driven them both! Just spoke to the chap with the Turbo, he says the only thing not right with it is the air con doesn't work despite being re-gassed. I'm sure he said something about a new compressor being fitted. Either way, it don't work! I guess this would be price - but a good negotiating tool too!

At least he didn't play the just needs a regas card so at least he maybe fairly honest. There are not many AC that do work including my own at the minute. I will fit that new compressor when it gets a bit warmer!!! Could give you some leverage though and not the end of the world. I am failry genned up on HVAC and when I fit the new pump it will run on modern r134a [:)]

As long as the blower works then its not too bad

The nightmare I'm having at the moment is insurance. With a company car I've got no cover for other vehicles. Tried pretty much every 1 day insurance web site and none of them will cover cars over group 18 []

Would be even better if they didn't make you complete the whole bloody form before telling you - even happened with the web sites that said they do cover cars in higher groups. Looks like I'll be passenger only tomorrow[:(]

Shame I am indisposed mate other wise I could have rode shotgun and spanked the pants off of it on your behalf [:D]

No worries Rob, I wont be buying tomorrow anyway - trying to be sensible about it ;)

If one of them feels right enough will go for a second viewing with intention to buy and get insured - might drag you along for that one though [:D]

Hi Andy,

I'm a relative new comer to Porsche's & 944's (18months) but I would go for an S2 everytime Turbo would be great but possible more exoensive if things aren't right? main thing in both cases is it's condition & history viz it's price? expect to pay more for a Turbo especially a late date S2 Turbo in VGC with complete history. I wouldn't worry about the aircon at this stage if the rest is good? I know from experiance on my V70 solving aircon problems can take time & cash often it's as simple as leaking 'O' rings losing gas, if it's the aircon rad that could be expensive unless you can find a used one? Also if it's had a new ac pump it could be electrical feed to it usually simple 12v supply via on/off switch or heater controls. Nice to have but not essential compared with rest of car? My S2 cab is missing the paper data label in boot but still good car for what I paid!

Good luck with search!

Yr right on the Turbo Tony, having been out in rob's yesterday I really liked it. I think both cars I'm looking at will be like chalk and cheese - I may be wrong. Both look sorted and one is twice the price of the other. Got a real good feeling about both tbh and the aircon doesn't put me off if the rest of the car is straight.

Worlds appart but great at what they do, and if well sorted they will both do it very well!!

As for insurance, I don't know you personal details but my '44 was started on a fresh policy without NCB last years for £379 8000 miles a year fully comp. You are looking for classic car policies aren't you?
I've changed my insurer this year as I want to do more miles in it, £433 12k fully comp.+ commuting.

Try Go Compare, they search classic policies as well

Hi Paul, It's not insurance generally I've struggled with, got some classic quotes and went on compare the market (wont do go compare on principal due to their annoying adverts!!) It was only 1 day insurance no one would look at
