So I'm looking for a possible new engine for my 911 997 2006 Turbo Tiptronic S but I don't know which of the engine variants that I've got - how do I find out short of trapsing into a dealer?

You'll likely want an exchange engine not a new one, they are much cheaper. Call any OPC's parts department, give them your vehicle details and they will be able to work out what engine you have and the exchange engine price.
Thanks. You've answered a question that I haven't asked though not unhelpful; My quote all in now with the price of parts is a bit salty to repair the engine properly - I think a brand new unit is £47K - anyhow, I'm not paying that for a car valued at £55K - Since you raise the subject of an exchange unit does an OPC take and renovate your engine or take one in exchange for a pre reconditioned engine?
The latter. They'll take your engine and crate over a reconditioned one from Germany. I believe those engines also come with all the ancillary parts (belts, hoses etc) which add up to a lot. From previous figures I had for a 996 GT3 exchange engine vs outright purchase, the price for the exchange was 40% cheaper.
GT1 engine parts are actually (relatively speaking) fairly reasonable, so I'm surprised the cost is too high to repair?

I am surprised at the price of an engine. I wanted a crate 991.1 3.8L engine which in 2015 cost £20k but there was a core exchange engine credit of £9k so net £11k.
Why did the engine on a 991 fail may I ask?
If that is the Gen 1 then I can "somewhat" understand cost as it is a pre-DFI and higher production cost engine but at Essen Classic rebuilt 2.7RS engines are c€45k
Nothing available from engine recycle companies? There seem to be a few on eBay
