Which Battery Trickle Charger?

Merlin SSE

Good afternoon all

In order to ensure tip top battery condition, I'd like to keep the car connected to a trickle charger/Battery conditioner and as its garaged that is thankfully an option.

I wondered what make/model you guys and girls are using and what advice you have regarding this?

Many thanks.

Jay

I have a CTek XS3600 and a (don't laugh) Lidl Ultimate Speed conditioner. Both work equally well. I permanently attached the CTek adapter to the battery (putting a fuse inline) and run the plug out through the front corner of the bonnet. The seal has plenty of 'give' so I can shut the lid completely. I bought a separate CTek 12v plug, and attached it to the Lidl charger, and also put a permanent adapter on the Cayman, so I can use either charge on both cars. The CTek cost me about £35, and the Lidl was £13.99, but they only have them in stock 2-3 times a year.

I'll take a couple of pics later to show you what I mean.

I also use a CTEK xs3600. I have used it for many years on motorbikes and my 3.2 without problem.

I use an Optimate charger bought in 2000 and still working fine and last year bought a Lidl charger as back-up. Worth a punt at that price, I thought, and works fine. I wouldn't be without them.

I adapted the hard wiring on my 993 to accept either charger. As I understand it, it's only the newer 911s that are wired to allow charging via the cigar lighter. Someone (on the IB site, I believe) tried to charge through the cigar lighter and succeeded in melting the under-dash wiring. Not recommended!

Fair point Paul but holidays and working away tend to get in the way of car fun sometimes lol.

Thanks for all your replies guys. A CTEK3600 it is then.

Draper Battery Master

I use a Draper as well, have had it about 7 years, used it previously on my 944S with no problems as it would flatten its battery after about 10 days of no use, altho' the 911 doesn't seem to flatten the battery until it hasn't been used for about 5 weeks

The CTEK3600 charger is very good and has been recommended on several forums.

I use Porsche's own charger, think I paid around £55 several years ago, it's been very reliable but not as fancy or functional as the CTEK.

Regards.
