Which Battery

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if this has been asked before...but i need a new battery for my 1992 C2.
What is the largest battery that can physically fit into the battery tray? I want to buy as big a rated battery as possible to help store as much charge as possible.

I have a CTEK3600, but still want to be sure of the best battery for the space available.

In the 9 yrs I had the 964,I changed the battery only once to a Varta premium item 75 amp/hour which just fitted the battery tray.
 
We list all the Bosch batteries with the sizes on our website, check what room you have 1st!!
 
I personally have a Bosch S5 Silver Plus (HSB010) which, despite being pricey (ÂŁ115) seems pretty good...and it comes with a 5year guarantee.

I *think* that's the one Bosch now do instead of the 7HN that I bought 4 years ago (which is no longer available). ÂŁ115 is probably about half the price of Porsche branded one [;)]

Marcus-what a lovie you are!-the Varta cost around ÂŁ68 +VAT-& as I buy all my company batteries at this place I seem to get keen prices.

Well,somebody has to live in the Sarth-however,I'm an engineer (with some automotive background--Renold Chains)-you're an engineer(with possibly more such background) -I try to stay on track-you sometimes stay on track-it's quite worrying really,'cause my Dad didn't travel down south in his work as far as I recollect[:)]

Of course older people have more experience that they can pass on to younger siblings!

Batteries; I think the Varta I got was a 'silver' label(?) - whatever that meant. It actually replaced what looked like a newish Bosch that never seemed to hold its charge for more than 3 days or so.

Prior to my car going in for its restoration work, my battery used to last up to 2 weeks sometimes, 1 week was never a problem, now it goes flat in just a few days.

I can't see how the restoration work can have had any effect on the health of the battery, but there is such a marked difference in performance before & after.

The only other electrical issue is that the interior lights no longer work with the door open, its either on all the time or off, again there shouldn't have been any need to interfere with the interior, apart from having to remove the nearside door, as all the work was to the outer bodywork.

I have been able to recharge the battery using the charger, I also used jump leads last weekend although some might not recommend this (no ill effect btw).

Just a coincidence?

Obviously I'll need a new battery now, just wanted to check whether it might be something else. btw I don't have a meter [&o]

If it worked before & now doesn't as well ,it might just be that your battery was disconnected for the work and/or an earth lead disturbed-certainly worth checking out these areas.
 
I had a Banner 80Ah 840A battery Calcium variety which was the biggest I've come across, served me well for about 5 years before I forgot to charge it one week, and it went so flat it couldn't be saved.

Banner are an Austrian company which used to make stuff for Audi IIRC.

is it not coinsidence were having a cold snap _5 this will kill a battery thats on its way out ask me how i know same thing last year
 
So what is it that drains the battery so quickly anyway?

My Mundano was parked outside my house for 4 weeks when I had a loan car whilst my car was in for restoration. In that time I had to start it up and move it, just reversing a few feet and moving it back, maybe 4 or 5 times having not turned wheel for a week and it was always on the button. It has one LED that flashes inside, the same as the 964 (only one of the door button LEDs works).

Where is all that charge going & can anything be done to stop it?
 
Could be many things that take a draw on the battery Colin but with the interior lights not now working i'd check the door switches are operating correctly. A common fault.
Have the battery tested and also check the alternator is charging. Finding a drain on the battery could be near impossible without a multimeter and pulling fuses.

Well, just to make it more of a coincidence...I also developed a battery drain problem after my recent restoration! It's currently going flat within a few days.

I also believe that it's associated to the interior lights and/or the power windows because when I removed the interior lights fuse (#11) and the power window fuse (#4), my multimeter showed that the drain dropped from 0.36 amps to 0.07 amps. At the moment I'm suspecting the power window relay is the cause because I can get a similar reduction in the drain by removing the relay instead of the fuse. However the only way I can see of checking whether it's the relay is to swap it for a new one.
 
I seem to remember having an interior light issue some time ago.

I'm thinking if I can clean up the connections & get them working properly, that might help.

In the meantime, it might be worth my while pulling fuse 11 when I'm not using it to see if that helps.

makes sense as from what i've read the two are inter-linked, faulty switch leaves the windows with constant power/battery drain as it can't tell you've got out the car.

Just a note to anyone testing battery drain through the negative pole/strap don't
try to start the car while connected as it could fry the multimeter....No I didn't try it! [:D]
