which boxter is best

Hi. Can anyone tell me which Boxter to go for in their opinion. I am looking for a used one. Issues i need to know about. i.e. fuel consumption on different models. etc. spec and the like.
Look forward to hear your replies.
Thanks Mark.

I' ve got a new 2.7 which I find quite hairy enough for my purposes and also reasonably comfortable when the road surface is less than perfect. If you expect to do quite a few track days, then perhaps you should go for an " S"

The expense of an S is not just the cost of the vehicle. Insurance will be more, mainenance will be more expensive particularly if your budget means you have to get an older one with higher mileage. If you are concerned about fuel consumption....well....

There are some must have accessories - Air con, Leather seats, wind deflector and possibly upgraded alloys - others will add to this list!

I am not sure when the entry engine was upgraded from 2.5 to 2.7, but there has been a minor facelift for the 2003 model. No-one else would notice, but Boxster owners would - as they can spot red brake calipers on an " S" at 100 paces.

Service history and colour are also important

Hope this is helpful

Thank you James and Pat. I should be a little clearer. I have always been in love with the shape of the Boxter since its release. Its a car i have always wanted to own but dont know enough about them at the moment. A friend of mine hired one for the weekend a while back and kicked off the desire again. I am not a speed freak owing to the fact that i have 2 young children and run around in a Citroen Picasso for family reasons. I am looking for a used Boxter. Probably the 2.7version. Tech spec i dont much care for as it wont be my everyday run about. It will only have occasional use. So will be garaged a lot of the year due to circumstances. Family and the like. So things like air-con, Sat-nav, and other hi-techery i dont need. A raw version will do for me. And that also goes for the price too. I have seen some Boxters around the £24k mark and indeed the 1 my friend hired was a stunning silver in immaculate condition was for sale around £30k. Think it was around 5 years old. Hope i have made things slighly clearer for you. So please reply. Thanks again Mark.

Ask ten people and you' ll get ten different answers.

If your not loaded then your budget will determine what' s best for you.

There a lot of options available so you can virtually spec your own car even on a second hand vehicle - it may just take a little patience waiting for " your" car to turn up.

I' m not sure that having an ' S' is going to cost you more on servicing but it will effect MPG and insurance. Of course an early 2.5 will be a lot cheaper and also cheaper to insure.

Great. 97 low option 2.5 as you put it. Although i am sure there are people out there that own a low option 2.5. Who might take offence to that. We are not all loaded you know. Thanks i am learning already. This is the type of response i am looking for. Honest and to the point.
Mark.

I went down the LHD drive route, purely because i had limited funds being only 23 and spending a lot of time out in the states it didnt bother me driving a left hooker, managed to find a 97 with all the extras plus tracker for £16k i have so far driven 2k miles and have loved every second and would definately consider buying another left hooker (probably an S) though insurance and fuel on the 2.5 are surprisingly inexpensive (£900 odd full comp insurance and around 30mpg!).

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Gooner

Just be careful and follow the golden rule for buying a second hand car - take someone with you whom you trust and is impartial - there a lot of shysters [:' (] out there...

Don' t worry about the fuel consumption. On a 3.2, you can have a lot of fun and still get 25mpg.

I have not seen a Boxster (spelling !!) without a wind deflector so you should be able to buy one without forking out over 200 quid for this essential item. Leather seats are a must as is climate control IMHO. Litronics are well worth getting as are heated seats. 18" wheels are the dogs danglies but the tyres are a bit more expensive. Don' t believe all the cr*p you read about the ride being spoiled with 18" s , total nonsense and you will have even less body roll on track days. Colour is not much of an issue with the Boxster however I have never seen a white one.

Why don' t you come along to Eynsham where you will be able to chat to owners and have a look at the different models. See the Eynsham thread elsewhere on the forum.

Whether a 2.5, 2.7 or an S, he who grins most wins ! [:D]

Some of the options on the car can make life a little easier. These are my opinions that as John says will not the the same as others [:)]

Must haves:
Wind deflector (makes the top down driving better)
Air con (for when the roof is up and you want to keep the cabin de-misted)

Good to haves
PSM (I think this came in late 2000, if you are worried about your driving skills, it catches the back end nicley)

Nice to have
Litronics (Makes night driving better)

Things to be careful of
The old sports suspension pre 2000? was very hard and with the 18" wheels lots of people complained. Later version were better

Sports seats. If you are large, they may be uncomfortable

Try out and talk to lots of people, they will always give their opinions, us drivers like nothing better than to talk about our cars[:D]

Later version were better

Aaaaah ! I have a MY2002 which explains why I don' t experience the problem. Does anyone have the full story on the rear main seal issue ?

Watch out for a less than perfect rear screen. The cost of a new hood is huge and don' t think you can just replace the perspex.

There is a least one chap who can replace the plastic window.

What is it about the RMS that needs further explanation?

When talking about MPG issues most of the petrolhead Porsche owners I know boast how little they have achieved rather than how high [:D][:D]

Being the sad sort of person I am, I have been keeping detailed records of my fuel for my last 3 cars [:)]

for my MY2001 S which has done just under 36,000 miles my MPGs are:

driving to and from work 24-26 MPG (70 miles / day mainly A roads)
Motorway driving 28-29 MPG
Being stupid 19 MPG!

If any one wants my spreadsheet, I am more than happy to send. Just mail me

Graeme

AC on in the winter, mainly off in the summer as the roof is down unless it get realy hot and then to hell with it, keeps the toes cool [:D]

Graeme

And of couse details of who you have lent them to!

Going back to Gooners question, I really do think Air Con is a must have if you are paying over £20k for a car these days and there is therefore the opportunity to drive a really hard bargain if you find one you like without. I think I could also convince myself that leather seats are an " emporer' s new clothes" type of thing - although I have never actually seen alcantara.

Best of luck Gooner for the comimg season. Remember not to park the new toy outside on match days!

Pat

Well what can i say. Your replies already are making me feel very welcome on this site and i dont even own one yet. Please keep them coming as i need to know as much as possible about the Boxster. So far i think i want a 2.5 97 or onwards. Silver or black. and dont mind a left hooker at all. Sounds like i might get one a little cheeper that way.
Unless you can advise me otherwise. So thanks so far this site is brilliant and its making me want it now.[:D] Thanks again. Mark. Please keep feeding me.

What is it about the RMS that needs further explanation?

Hi Digger,

Is it true that cars manufactured after a certain date have a different seal that is not susceptible to oil leaks ? Will Porsche fix any that are outside warranty ?
