Which breakdown cover?

It's that time of year when my breakdown cover is due. I've always been with the RAC but i'm now looking at £130 renewal so wondered if there are any decent, cheaper alternatives out there? Apart from the RAC and AA i'm not sure what other companies there are out there who are crdible and trustworthy. Cheers.

Have been with the RAC for 4 years and have been very pleased with the service especially when the 44's engine gave up on the way home from Thruxton after the BTCC.

I used to be with Greenflag although a little cheaper not such a good service and they depend on a network of local garages rather than there own staff.

Its the old saying you gets what you pay for, I pay monthly and at 16. per month for joint cover in what ever car decides to play up I think is good value.

If you attend a BTCC race, like us you may get a discount for renewing I managed to get joint cover for the price of single, you get cheap breakdown cover and a good days racing!

I'm with ADAC.de and have 'Plus' membership. Costs €90 for me and my partner, for the equivalent of AA's homestart, relay and also includes full European cover and repatriation to the UK.

There is an application form on their website which is in English. Send it to them with your credit card details.

The AA are their UK partner so will deal with any breakdowns you have in this country just as if you were a full AA member.
 
Damn! Beaten to it. ADAC is usually the answer. Still cheap even with the poor exchange rate and they use the AA in England and other similar companies over the rest of Europe. The service is superb (the customer is king in Germany) and theyll even recover you from the Nordschleife...

As the previous poster has pointed out, everything is now in English too and they dont require a Germna credit card to pay now either.

I've been very happy with RAC over the years, usually prompt and attentive. Also excellent for "lone woman" thing....stranded wife/girlfriend goes to the head of the queue we've found.

However, see this week's thread about the immobilsed immobiliser...RAC came out promptly and had a good go at fixing it, but Home Start would only transport my car 10 miles from home to get it fixed. As all my local indies are further than that I had to pay! Probably all providers have the same restiction...it would be interesting to know. Might influence my decision to renew?

Moral? Make sure you break down miles from home!!
 
Thanks chaps. I'm not unhappy with the RAC hence i've been with them for probably over 10yrs, but always had the basic cover with them which was very cheap. Luckily i've not had to call on them that often - only once on the 944 for intermittent starting (reference sensor). Now i've got a family I don't fancy having all the drawbacks of the basic cover as being stuck by the side of the road and having limited service coverage with a couple of kids in the back of the car doesn't appeal, so i've recently (last year) upgraded my membership to include homestart, relay and to include the wife as well. I was shocked at how much the membership fee went up. This year I did receive a renewal discount, but thought I might shop around this year. I think i'll look into your suggestions above, but unless there is a significant saving to be made I might as well stick with them.

I believe that theres a substantial saving to be made by going with ADAC and thats not accounting for the Europe-wide cover either. When you factor this in then its a fraction of the price of the AA or the RACs comparable products.

My clutch failed on the 68 at SPA last year and getting them to do anything about it was a proper nightmare. They have a really low maximum towing charge which meant that they wouldnt arrange for the car to be taken a) Home or even b) to an opc in belgium. In the end I told them not to bother and arranged for a very good friend to trailer the car back for me from the hotel. A proper PINTA.

In the past I've had to call on the RAC from germany and it's been a service 2nd to none. I'll be going back with them thsi year I think...
 
Quick thread resurrect here.

The BMW broke down earlier in the year and as my second hour's in the cold waiting for the AA turned into a third hour, a passing RAC patrolman stopped to see if he could help. Since he managed to get me on my way, I feel it's only right that I switch my allegiance to them.

I know the AA do a club discount, but what about the RAC? I can't find any info on the PCGB website and I've recycled my copy of Porschefile.

Interesting...a mate had a Sierra Cosworth go up in flames on the way back from the 'ring 3 years ago & managed to get it all the way back to N Yorks through ADAC, even though it was an insurance write-off. I have ADAC for European cover and AA (via my wif'e membership) for the UK.

These companies usually have a "I'm thinking of leaving" phone menu option, I'm with the AA and use this option every year to get a considerable discount on the standard premium.


 
I'm sure there are tales to counter this but...

A VW Golf fell off the road in the snow. Two Occupants, one with all singing, all dancing AA cover, the other with All singing, all dancing RAC cover. The AA wouldn't come out, as for some reason it wasn't the right kind of accident. The RAC came out, but did say there would be a surcharge if special lifting aparatus was required.

I also understand - please correct me if I am wrong - that the AA operate a "Relay" service if the car breaks down miles from home - relayed from one recovery company to the next until they get you home, and this can mean sitting out in the cold with a broken down car for each leg of the journey. The RAC will get one company to take you the whole journey where-ever possible.

On the basis of this, I'm with the RAC.
 
Agreed, this isn't a money thing, it's a "let down by the AA" thing so I'm moving to the RAC come what may.

But if there's a discount to be had from paying my PCGB membership then I am happy to take advantage of it.
