Which engine oil do you use?

I am interested as to what engine oil you are using.
I know Porsche recommend Mobil 1, but exactly what grade and type?
My indy (2 ex-Porsche mechanics) two years ago used Petronas as it has Porsche A40 spec approval, but again am not sure which type but it was 5-40.
I have 8 litres of Petronas Syntium 3000E 5-40 ready to use.
And while the car was still under warranty I used Mobil 1 FS 0-40 between two scheduled services.

According to the service schedule the oil change should be done 2 yearly with the intermediate/maintenance service schedules.
But as I am starting to service the car myself I will start changing the oil yearly even though my annual mileage is low.

Opie Oils recommend for my 981 :-
Mobil 1 FS 0-40
Mobil Super 3000 X1 5-40
Shell Helix Ultra 5-40
plus several others - Fuchs Titan, Millers, Comma, Motul, Gulf, Valvoline, Texaco, Castrol, Duckhams

Castrol Edge Professional A3 0-40 is the most expensive at £120 for 8 litres (8 x 1 ltr)
Then, Mobil 1 FS at £90 for 8 litres (1 5ltr, 3 x 1 ltr)
One of the Millers brands is the cheapest at £53 for 8 litres.
I know its often personal preference.
I have used Valvoline for both my MG's for years.

 
It is very much personal preference, and I believe all the oils on the A40 Approval list equally as good - otherwise they wouldn't be on there. My only real preference is to use a 5W-40 oil (Mobil Super 3000 X1 5-40).

If you like Valvoline, their products with EU or WW A40 approval are: Valvoline SynPower MST C3 SAE 5W-40 Valvoline Voltronic 0W-40 RS A40 Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W–40 Valvoline SynPower SAE 0W–40

The only Millers oil on the list is Millers XF Longlife 5W-40. The Petronas oils listed are: PETRONAS SYNTIUM 7000 0W-40 PETRONAS Selenia K 5W-40 PETRONAS Selenia WR 5W-40

so it looks like the Syntium 3000E isn't suitable.

The Petronas Syntium 3000E is labelled as Porsche A40 spec.

I have been using Valvoline MaxLife 5-40 for my Mitsubishi FTO but it was getting more difficult to get hold of.

So last few changes I have been using Mobil Super 3000 X1 5-40.

 
Decided to take your lead Richard.

I will keep the Petronas Syntium for the next oil change on the FTO.

Just bought 10 litres of Mobil 1 Super 3000 X1 from EuroCarParts for £63.58

Opie Oils had 8 litres for £64.50, delivered free.

 
Just found this on the Revolution Porsche website.

In our experience, Mobil Super 3000 X1 5W-40 is the best performing oil for Porsches in the English climate, particularly for cars with engines that are ‘worn in’ and have reasonable mileage on the clock. Whether you put your Porsche through its paces at track days or just use it for short commutes from cold, we believe that this fully synthetic oil provides the best wear protection and so use it as standard for services at our Brighouse workshop.

There are some exceptions depending on the model and age of the car we are working on, such as using 10W-40 grade oil for older, air-cooled Porsches. The most common exception is for new cars, when we prefer Mobil 1 New Life 0W-40, the recommended factory-fill engine oil for most Porsche engines.

One advantage of using a 0W-40 oil over a 5W-40 oil will be better low temperature protection: something like -40degC rather than -30degC, so hardly an issue in our climate! [;)]

Well have changed the engine oil & filter this morning.

Drained 8.35 litres out, level indicator was at maximum when hot before draining.

Put 0.3 litre in the oil filter housing.

Put 6.7 litres in to start with to warm up and check for leaks, level was at minimum with a yellow indicator.

Put another 0.5 litres in and it has moved up to halfway.

Last time I drained the oil 3 years ago I only got 6.4 litres out (that's almost 2 litres difference from today).

And put 6.7 litres back in.

I did leave it draining for longer this time.

I reckon that with the boxer layout the oil settles in various nooks and crannies and in the cam boxes, making it very difficult to drain it all. I guess that - as you’ve found - the longer you let it drain the better!

I think a dry fill capacity is supposed to be 10 litres.

Obviously its impossible to drain all the old oil out.

So I think rule of thumb 7.5-8.5 litres.

I did have the car level on axle stands this time when draining it out whereas I think I might have had only the back end up the last time so as the drain plug is towards the rear of the sump, some old oil will have not drained out at the front when I did it before.

And it was on the max mark from when the oil change was last done by the independent whereas I have not got it midway.

Satisfying job done though, next is a brake fluid flush.

That tallies exactly with what I put in to the mid-point mark.

So I wonder whether the mid-way point on the level indication is what is preferable rather than to the max mark.
