Which Engine Oil ?

I would be interested to hear any views on recommended oil for the 3.4 Carrera.

I am due for a service shortly, and would specify a certain oil if there turns out to be a clear consensus via this forum.

Any views appreciated.

Mobil 1 will be the overwhelming response my friend. For a multitude of reasons, recommeded by Porsche, demanded by buyers looking at second hand cars, its performance characteristics etc etc. Mobil 1.

Mobil Synt S 5W/40 is in my 3.4 (80k).

Was recommended by Indy as being better in older slightly worn engines (rather than brand new 997s) - quieter yet offering same protection as Mobil 1.

Been 3 months and engine is definitely running better than before and hardly used a drop of oil in that time.

Thanks,

Steve

Richard, I am interested in understanding more about your own choice of oil Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40. I must confess that I an unfamiliar with this oil, and am curious about why you made your choice.

Based on your other posts, I am sure there is some clear well informed justification....and I am keen to understand this.

I thought that a 0W-40 oil was just too light for an older engine. Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40 is a Porsche approved oil, has good write-ups, and was recommended by forum member Nick Ramsay (NXI20) after some careful research. The first thing I noticed was that it virtually eliminated the startup tappet clatter, and the occasional puff of smoke at startup. Since then I just stuck with it. I'm sure any decent fully synthetic 5W-40 would do the same job.

Edit: Most of the oils on the new A40 list are 5W-, so maybe things are moving that way. As a special treat for New Year's Eve, here is the list from the 996 Technical Articles section: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/legacy/clientftp/Register/996/tec_approved_oils_2009.pdf

Just as an update - Richard's comment above refers to my previous C4. I run my GT3 on Mobil-1 15W/50 Motorsport oil. It's changed every 5,000 miles (that's about 3 times a year!) due to the number of trackdays I do. It's doing a sterling job too, as the car is used hard but still doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. It's now on 52K miles.
