Time for exhaust upgrade......

An advice?

There is a lot of mention for the RSR - Carnewal, however, these are modified "old" exhausts? as opposed new however, sound is supposed to be second to none though?

Intend to keep cats as standard...but would like a better sounding system.

Have done the "listening" on you tube....but really hard to tell which soud best?

Any suggestions most welcome.

I had the same problem a few years ago. I came to the conclusion that listening to them on the web was a bit of a waste of time.

Asking people their opinion is probably more of a waste of time as what's a loud or over whelming noise to me might not be to you. Even if you do happen find somebody with similar tastes to you, the typical driving you do may be completely different. For example, some find the "boom" you get from some aftermarket silencers unacceptable but as this is mostly a problem on motorways above 70 or 80 may not be an issue to someone who mostly sticks to A and B roads.

RSRs get a very good name and Gert sells modified new units if you don't like the idea of fitting somebody's old ones and he still takes your old ones as part exchange. I think he also allows you to fit and test and if you don't like them you just bundle them up and send them back but this might not apply to modified new units.

For what it's worth I ended up with DesignTek units that are just a tiny bit louder than standard and am very happy with them. I intend going for a 200 cell cat next as I think this will release a bit more power and give a better sound.

993 rs running cargraphic headers with heat exchangers, 100 cell race cats, techart cup mufflers, techart tail pipes.

I can recommend Gerts re builds to RSR's. I had his RSR's with de-cat pipes.
Downside was very noisy in this configuration. I put the cat converter back on and then it quieted them down.

If you are to do it, go the hole hog and get 100 cell cats and gerts RSR's. Gert can do the lot for you. (Your original Cat can have its inserts changed.)
If you are worried about noise levels keep your standard system as i must admit Porsche got it right. My preference now is to keep standard.
If you want performance then you will need performance cats.

Good luck

Another vote for Gert & the RSR's - had them fitted last Feb and very pleased both with the sound and the service (I went over to Gert's to have them fitted).

Dansk sport silencers and Carnewal's 100 cell cats are the only way to go...

Check your PM / email for more details

I have a 993TT with a TUBI exhaust which is a good compromise between sound and performance. No idea about cost as it was on the car when first bought.

topcats993....

Who is selling? and what?

Looks like going down the Cargraphics route with 100 cell cats.

Any additional advice most welcome...

My 1997 C2S needed new silencers as the original pipes had rotted into pinholes. Replaced with a Dansk Cat & Dansk 'Sport' silencers, all in stainless. Nice Quality, easy & precise fitting, has a nice sound which is throatier than standard but still under 100db for trackdays. However there is some boom at 70-80mph, although this disappears at 80+
Good value from Design 911, stainless steel & alot cheaper than original mild steel items.

My mufflers have now been removed - thank god for Dremel and diamond cutting disks !!!!! All bolts rusted solid.........!!!

Now for the cat !!!!

My mufflers ar on sale on Ebay - if anyone interested - make your own RSRs or trade with Carnewal

Will post pics ..

I compared my LPMM exhaust to RSR's in a golf club car park and we both preferred the LPMM. I have 100 cell cats too and have had 2 strangers tell me they liked the sound of my V8!

The LPMM was started by Leland Pate (pardon spelling): he simply made a permanent version of the modern "Sport Exhaust" by welding a pipe (1.5" and 2" diameter) across from the silencer in-pipe to the out-pipe (as they are practically parallel and about 6 inches apart) so gases bypass the silencer dependant on your right foot.

Results:
Idling: sounds deeper and throatier, not really louder. Towards big American V8.
see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9gOxkzGXfo

Cruising: no real noticeable change as the exhaust gases follow laminar flow to mostly go through the silencers. If really fussy you may notice a slight amount of reasonance, but probably you will not notice it.

Hard acceleration: yippee, makes you smile every time and feel proud. From 2750 revs up it is great

Hard deceleration: if you quickly come off the gas pedal from 5000rpm say, you may gets some pops out back. Difficult to get.

I want my 993 to sound like an aircooled flat 6, not like a V8 muscle car.
