i have a 997 c2s, and am interested to learn which fuels fellow drivers are using. eg today i filled up with tesco 99. is this is sensible choice?

V-Max by Shell (ne optimax) seems to be the all round favourite, definatley best for the x51 anyway.
BP Ultimate follows behind , a bit less repsonsive but overall good

Anthing else and there is a noticable drop in throttle repsonse and a lot more stuff kicked out the exhaust when you start it up again.
 
Another vote for V Max. I try and plan my tours that ensure Shell fuel stops. The location of Shell stations can be found at: http://www.viamichelin.com/b2b2c/gbr/dyn/controller/dlhomepage?&productId=74287&Source=CON&SourcesiteId=home but sadly its accuracy is not as good as I would like with Shell being slow to update the database when franchises change hands. The sat nav also lists petrol stations by proximity and brand but as is to be expected the accuracy declines with the age of the DVD.

BTW while refuelling with Shell V Max in Germany a week or so ago I noticed the pump indicated 100 ROM - anyone else spotted this?
 
997, Boxster and Cayman need higher octane fuel or they will pink. Despite the ECU/knock sensor sorting this out, damage will be done over a period of time.

Previous 996/Boxster will get away with 95 RON.

Supermarket higher octane fuel contain different additives.

I go for Shell V-Max every time

My tip would be that you do NOT fill up at a petrol station with low turnover, go for the stations which get through a lot of petrol. I made the mistake and got what could be expensive messages up on the computer screen like "Check engine Return to OPC asap" the cause was mildly contaminated fuel. Hope you enjoy

Check out the Shell UK website - has addresses and maps for all their garages in Europe - just the job for ensuring you can always get your V Power fill. I used it almost exclusively in the M3, and intend to do the same with my GT3.

I always go for 98/99 as well, but I would disagree that damage will occur. Some countries you can't get anything higher than 95 (Italy and the Highlands of Scotland for instance). Some people never put anything other than 95 in in Surrey! Not heard of any damage occuring...

BTW all, it is V-Power. Vmax is those days when you take your car for a drag race against a kid who has modded his engine to max and leaves you well behind [;)]

I was told by one of the managers at the Sainsbury fuel pump that Sainsbury has not got its own processing plant and it uses the same depots as BP pumps and so as far as he knows the super fuel is BP Ultimate re-branded. It is different with Tesco99 though...

Also, from what I have read both Tesco99 and Shell V-Power 99 have bio-ethanol blend whereas BP Ultimate 97 does not; I have found that on motorway mileages all these fuel are pretty similar in terms of MPG (in my 986) but in city run BP Ultimate or Sainsbury Super 97 gives about 2mpg more than Shell V- Power and Tesco99 being the worst for city runs. This may be different with newer engines i.e. 987/997 as they were designed with bio-ethanol blend fuel became widely available.

Yes, it is true that V-Power in Germany is 100RON and in Australia the 100RON is called V-Power Racing see: -> link <-

Shell V Power vote for me!

I have noticed much better fuel economy when running on a tank of this, also car drove like a dream - that might be incidental as can't measure it.
 
No, youre not imagining it.

I only ever ran Optimax and then V Power in my C2S so couldnt comment on what it would be like on a lower quality fuel, however, I could tell the difference betwwen Sainsburys 97 RON and Optmax 98 RON in the M3 so it does make a difference to proper high performance engines.

Will be running V Power only in the twin turbo 335i when I get it.

I would only ever put Shell V-Power in any 997 myself.

I have used BP Ultimate a couple of time for emergency fill-ups and the car seemed a lot more sluggish.
 
Interesting,

According to my 120d, BP Ultimate diesel is miles better than Shell diesel extra !

Smoother/morepower and lots more mpg.

Yes, I know thats got nothing to do with Porsches !
