Which gearbox?? S2 or Turbo?

Right I think my gearbox is totally goosed [:(] it doesn't seem to be a happy bunny

Was hoping it would last a little longer but hey!! I am just in the process however of trying to get a V8 for it over from the states so which gearbox would be best. I have heard that you need a turbo box but do you really, is it a lot stronger than the S2??

The car is also a 2.5 LUX so would the box fit with no mods??

A 250 Turbo 'box has stronger 1st and 2nd gears which would be good for a V8 More importantly still it has LSD and it's longer geared. I'd not look at anything else for a Chevy conversion myself.
 
Interesting ... could this be the first V8 conversion on the site?

I'd love to see one in the tin.

Only problem is finding the turbo box, at the moment the only turbo box I can find is £900 off ebay.... Thats a bit of a gulp, I thought they were going for about £650

Guess the hunt is on then!
 
That would have to be with LSD yes? The 951 box would be geared very well for a V8 conversion, but you would want LSD for sure. I would contemplate a non LSD tranny and get one of those aftermarket Japanese LSD's that have featured in a couple of UK Porsche mags of late. It might cost you a bit more but you're getting a better box in the end....er so to speak.[:D]

Having said that, check out this site. These guys do know what they're talking about for a Hybrid, and they recommend the 924 turbo 'snail' tranny as the strongest.

I would definately go for as long a geared box as you possibly can with all the low down torque that a V8 will throw out. My own engine is no V8 but it makes the standard Turbo gearbox seem incredibly close ratio'd [:)]

An S2 box with a V8 would annoy the heck out of you, you'd be changing gear ALL the time [8|]. I have read on forums that it is easy to swap a N/A 5th gear into the Turbo box and it will make it even longer geared for comfortable cruising at low revs (and lower MPG )

There are a lot of ifs and maybes, but if (as seems likely, if only so it doesn't get left in a barn to deteriorate) I end up shipping my car to NZ then I imagine it might well end up with a V8 in it. I don't rate the original engine and have no interest whatsoever in tuning it further and it's going to be a lot easier to get a V8 from a Holden over here than it would have been to find one in the UK (never mind the lack of Porsche tuning parts and expertise here), plus there is an established tuning scene for them here and plenty of expertise in fixing them.

Having said that if Chris is anywhere beyond thinking it's a nice idea, and he has the will to keep momentum up, then he will beat me to it by a country mile as it's something that is only on the waiting list for the waiting list to become a low priority for me. In the event I do it and nobody else has then you'd still be better off going to the US to look at one in the metal in any case.

I agree with this in principle, however my concern is that an LSD in a non-cooled gearbox might not last that long due to the heat generated by the friction between the LSD plates. The cooled LSD boxes have larger oil capacity, which dissipates the heat more, as well as cooling (though i'm not sure how effective that coiled cooling tube is), but in a non-cooled gearbox you might be better off with an ATB diff if the car is not going to be used on track that much. They are certainly supposed to be better for the road application due to the way they split the torque across the axels.
