Which Gearbox

Hello All,

What is the difference between the 915 and G50 gearboxes?

And, how do you tell which one is fitted to a late 1986 car? I know that 1987 and onwards all had the G50 fitted but what about late 1986 cars - is there a way to tell from the option codes or VIN numbers or is there a noticeable visible difference when inspecting the car?

thanks in advance

Easy: 915 has reverse in the bottom right corner and back
G50 has reverse to the left and away (next to first gear so far left and up)

G50 has integrated fog lights in the rear reflector

Model year 1987 started in August 1986 until july 1987.

HTH,

Bert

Thanks Bert, just what I was looking for!

I have only ever driven 3.2's with the G50 and I am currently looking at an earlier car with the 915 'box. Would anyone care to comment on the difference between the two when in use?

I know the G50 is much preferred, so I guess my question is will the 915 detract from the driving experience much?

Hi Mark

Personally I have never driven a 915 car, but your question will likely bring a very wide range of responses.

Better to keep an open mind, drive the car and see what you think.

This is the car I am looking at : http://autoincsports.com/Porsche/1986%20July%20911C/For%20Sale%20New.htm

just in case anyone was interested in what your money gets abroad!

I have driven both. My current car is a 915 (early) but im upgrading to a G50. The latter is structurally stronger gearbox and can take more BHP and IMHO has a better gear change.

The advantage of the 915 is that its lighter and takes less power to drive it as compared to the G50.

+1 what Pete said. IMO he's spot on.

The G50 has a hydraulic clutch and the 915 is cable although the reverse location is an easy question for anyone to answer who has the car.

Oh, to answer your question, G50 all the way!
