Which Induction kit for an s2

node

New member
Hi, I am after a bit of tuning advice. I have been looking for an induction kit for my 3.0L S2. There doesn't seem to be many about, I have seen one on design911 for about £175! Apart from this I can only find replacement panel filters such as K&N for about £40. Is there much gain in bhp with induction kits or panel filters or is it just wasted money and false claims of power gains? I am also looking to chip/remap it, apart from this I'll keep it pretty much standard. Any advice apreciated, thanks in advance.

Afternoon !

Ref. the tuning side of things for an S2, yes there is a direct K & N Panel filter replacement avaialbe which will make a small difference.

I believe and I'm sure current S2 owners will correct me (not owned one for ~ 8yrs and things have changed...) that the simplest way to a power hike is from the 211bhp to ~ 225bhp using the promax chip kit. My understanding is that this simply replicates the original 225bhp SE spec S2's that were produced at the end of the production run as an extra incentive to buy the car.

In addition to this, a better exhaust and/or cat delete (if you car has a cat ?) together with a MAF installation (not cheap though...) should see you car get up to ~ 240bhp I think ?

Good luck with it though, I do miss my S2 - lovely smooth power delivery and a (virtually) bomb proof engine

Yes indeed an induction kit will get you a few horses but nothing to write home about and a decat will also help. An aftermarket chip will gain a few more but more importantly will improve the power band and almost everyone who gets one seems pleased with the effect. Low to mid 220's seems to be the typical ceiling for power in an S2 without going down the supercharging route...

There may be induction kits but I'll wager they are a waste of time in terms of power output. Ditto for the K&N panel filter. (Worth fitting as it saves money over time, but nothing other than that).

I have tried drilling huge holes in the front of the airbox. It helped, but not a lot.

Personal opinion? Don't bother. Keep it in top condition, well serviced and spend the extra on higher-octane fuel.

A chip is well worthwhile. I did a write-up on here on the Promax one a while ago, which you may like to dig out.

Oli.

Seconded. [:)]

Plenty of better ways to spend the money IMO, starting with the chip and de-cat. Also, a good 4-wheel alignment.

Thirded the high octane fuel, IIRC the S2 has 2 knock sensors, so if it detects knock it reins in the engine a fair amount. I'm taking mine to be remapped by Chip Wizards when the engine is run in, simply to see how much it does now make, as pre-rebuild it made about 180bhp IIRC.

I wouldn't mess with the intake much either, its designed in a certain way for performance so messing with it has a tendancy to reduce power. I'm pretty sure I remember someone messed with the exhaust manifold and lost about 5bhp!

I don't think a MAF is really worth any bhp, but it makes the engine much happier to rev and more responsive - I have Big Dave's fitted on mine for 2 years or so.

As Paul said, a 4 wheel alignment will be needed, mine was out on one side by a fair way, I also replaced the castor mounts so it needed it anyway... next on the list is Gaz coilovers..... [:D] Then maybe an exhaust system, my dads '83 924 sounds so "angry", even at idle. I want that sound [:D]

Kev at EMC said you can get about 240bhp (I think) from a good S2 - by having it mapped to run rich as hell though

I was tipped off by a garage I used to use that the key with the S2 intake is to make sure it's not too short (which many kits seem to be), they had been setting up an S2 race car on their dyno and discovered this. You want a long J pipe that runs along inside the badge panel with a good cone on the end. Simon at ESS sold me the stainless J pipe to which I added my existing Green filter, but I think he can sell a whole kit (just ask for it to be as long as possible).

It works a treat and definately had a lot more torque than the shorter bodge I was running before. Don't expect huge improvements over the standard airbox but in my opinion it was definately noticeable and worthwhile (as is the improved induction noise [:D]).
